Gamescom 2024 – Art secrets revealed!

When it comes to game development, few aspects are as crucial as the art direction. For Godforge, the ambitious new project by Fateless Games, that responsibility falls on the shoulders of Magic Media, a powerhouse team that has played an integral role in shaping the game’s stunning visuals. Recently, members of the Fateless and Magic Media teams sat down for a deep dive into the creative process, sharing insights into character creation, environment design, and the challenges of crafting AAA-quality art for mobile.

Building a World of Myths and Legends

Art director Alexander from Magic Media detailed his journey into the project, explaining that he was initially brought in for a different MMO with a sci-fi setting. Transitioning to a fantasy project was a fresh challenge, but one he eagerly embraced. “I had worked on sci-fi my whole life, but fantasy was something I had always wanted to do,” he explained. “The opportunity to bring myths and legends to life in a game was too good to pass up.”

Fateless Games co-founders Sham and Simon echoed the excitement, explaining how their vision for Godforge hinged on delivering high-fidelity art on mobile. “Art was our number one priority,” Simon stated. “We wanted something visually stunning, something that could rival PC and console games while still running smoothly on a phone.”

The Process Behind the Characters

Creating a single character in Godforge is no small feat. Lead character artist Gino, along with concept artist Esther and environment lead Joseph, work together to bring each hero to life. From the initial concept to the final in-game model, the process involves multiple steps:

1. Moodboarding & Concepting – Every character starts with a strong visual identity based on historical and mythological references.
2. Proxy Modeling & Testing – A rough model is created to test proportions and animations in-game.
3. High-Poly Sculpting & Texture Baking – Detailed sculpting ensures AAA-quality visuals while optimizing for mobile.
4. Rigging & Animation – Once the model is finalized, the animation team breathes life into it with fluid movements and expressive attacks.
5. VFX & Finishing Touches – Special effects, lighting, and sound bring the character’s abilities to life.

One of the team’s proudest moments was finalizing their first character, the Brecilien Archer. “It was a long road to get there, but once we nailed the quality, everything else started falling into place,” Alex shared.

Breathing Life Into the Environments

Beyond the characters, Godforge’s environments play a crucial role in immersing players in its mythological world. The first major milestone was the Babylonian environment, which set the tone for the game’s overall aesthetic. Moving forward, the team is working on bringing a variety of legendary locations to life, including Avalon, Asgard, and Svarga (inspired by Hindu mythology).

“We want players to feel the weight of history in these environments,” Alex explained. “Every location should feel like a lost world filled with secrets and ancient power.”

A major innovation in Godforge’s world-building is the use of destructible environments. Initially introduced as a minor detail, the concept evolved into fully interactive battlefields where statues crumble and structures collapse during combat. “It started with small flags and stones moving in the wind,” Alex recalled. “Then we thought—what if a giant statue fell mid-fight? Now, we’re pushing the boundaries of what’s possible on mobile.”

The Art Team’s Favorite Characters

When asked about their favorite characters, the team had some interesting picks:

  • Alex’s Favorites – Ramses and the Green Knight, both of which were his own designs. “Seeing them go from concept to fully realized models was incredibly rewarding.”
  • Sham’s Favorite – Hercules. “His ‘Herc Smash’ ability is just so satisfying.”
  • Simon’s Favorite – Aphrodite, specifically for her mesmerizing ultimate ability.
  • The Community’s Pick? – Hades, whose design is packed with small details like a Cerberus belt and hidden effects.

What’s Next for Godforge?

With the game progressing at a rapid pace, the team is now focused on expanding the world and polishing character designs. Upcoming content includes:

  • New Mythological Environments – Asgard, Avalon, Svarga, and more.
  • Refined Motion Capture Animation – The team is leveraging motion capture for hyper-realistic character movements.
  • More Dynamic Battles – With destructible environments and cinematic special effects, battles are set to become even more immersive.

Final Thoughts

The collaboration between Fateless Games and Magic Media is proving to be more than just a partnership—it’s a creative family dedicated to delivering something truly special. “We’ve worked through challenges, refined our vision, and built a game we believe in,” Simon concluded. “Now, we can’t wait to share it with players.”

As Godforge moves closer to release, the excitement continues to build. With breathtaking visuals, deep lore, and an ever-expanding world, this is one game you won’t want to miss. Stay tuned for more updates as the journey unfolds!
