Gamescom 2024 – Overcoming Issues at Pace
When it comes to creating an epic game, it takes more than just a great idea—it requires passion, collaboration, and a clear vision. That’s exactly what’s happening with Godforge, a mythologically inspired game brought to life by Fateless Game Studio in partnership with Magic Media. In a recent discussion at Gamescom, the teams shared their journey, from the inception of their partnership to the challenges and triumphs of game development.
Finding the Right Partner: The Birth of a Collaboration
When Fateless first set out to create Godforge, they knew they needed a strong partner to bring their vision to life. After putting out a Request for Proposal (RFP) to multiple studios, Magic Media stood out as the perfect match.
Simon, co-founder at Fateless, recalled how Magic Media impressed them from the start, not just with their technical expertise but with their genuine passion for the project. “They weren’t the cheapest, but we knew they were the best for what we wanted to create,” he stated.
And that passion was mutual. Mladen, Magic Media’s creative director, shared his enthusiasm for the project: “I was really into Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes, and when I heard what they were trying to create, I thought—this is something I want to be a part of.”
This strong foundation of mutual excitement and shared vision set the stage for what has now been an 18-month journey of development.
Overcoming Challenges: The Grid Debate
One of the most significant challenges in the development of Godforge revolved around a core gameplay mechanic, the grid system. The original plan was to incorporate a grid-based battle system, both as a nostalgic callback to classic RPG mechanics and as a way to introduce unique character positioning dynamics. However, as development progressed, it became clear that the grid was creating more problems than solutions.
Magic Media raised concerns about the system’s impact on the game’s pacing and overall experience. The decision to remove the grid was tough, but ultimately, it led to a more streamlined, dynamic combat experience. “We always have bias for things we love,” said Simon, “but when experts like Mladen and the team at Magic Media tell you it’s not going to work, you have to listen.”
This decision reinforced the strength of their partnership. Rather than simply following orders, Magic Media actively contributed to the game’s design, ensuring that every decision made the game better.
The Power of Mythology: Bringing Legendary Characters to Life

A major highlight of Godforge is its unique take on gods, myths, and legends. The game doesn’t just pull from well-known figures like Hercules or Hades; it delves deep into various mythologies, unearthing fascinating yet lesser-known characters. “We could easily create a thousand heroes and still not scratch the surface of global mythology,” said Simon.
For Mladen, this process has been one of the most exciting parts of development. “You have characters deeply ingrained in cultural history, and when you design them properly, it feels natural and powerful.”
That attention to detail extends beyond just the character roster. The team ensures that factions, lore, and even character abilities reflect their mythological roots. Players can expect meaningful interactions, such as partner bonuses between legendary duos, which adds strategic depth to the gameplay.
And the best part? The team is still open to suggestions. Community feedback plays a huge role in deciding which legends will make it into the game next. Fans have already started asking for creatures like Yetis, the Loch Ness Monster, and even a Chupacabra!
The Future of Godforge: What’s Next?
Godforge isn’t just about launch day—it’s a live-ops game, meaning fresh content, new characters, and evolving game modes will keep the experience exciting long after release.
Two highly anticipated features include:
- Normalized PvP & Draft Mode PvE – These game modes will focus on skill-based play, allowing free-to-play players to compete fairly with those who invest heavily.
- Major Hero Events – Some of the most iconic figures in mythology, like Poseidon, will be introduced through large-scale events, complete with lore expansions and mini-cinematics.
For those wondering if their favorite mythological figures will appear in the game, don’t worry—the roster is ever-expanding. Even Dracula is on the table, though the team is debating whether to name him Dracula or Vlad the Impaler. What do you think?
A Game Made With Passion
As Magic Media and Fateless continue to push forward, one thing remains clear: Godforge is a game made by fans, for fans. The deep mythology, the careful game design, and the constant back-and-forth between developers and the community ensure that this project will stand out in the genre.
With Gamescom showcasing the game to new audiences and exciting future updates on the horizon, there’s never been a better time to get hyped for Godforge.
Stay tuned, and get ready to forge your own legends!
