From hilarious game industry war stories to insights on what makes a studio truly successful, this conversation is packed with fascinating insights.
So, let’s break it all down and get to know the newest powerhouses behind Godforge!
Meet the Legends: Who Are Dan, Joel, and Damon?
Dan – Creative Director Extraordinaire
Kicking off the introductions is Dan, who joins Fateless Games as the Chief Creative Director. With a 30-year career in the industry, Dan started as a character artist, working with Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo before moving to Austin, Texas, in 1999.
Some of his biggest career highlights include:
- Star Wars Galaxies – The legendary MMORPG where he met some of his future colleagues, including Joel and Damon.
- Founding Red Fly Studio – His own game development studio, which landed major projects like Ghostbusters, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and even a Darth Maul game personally greenlit by George Lucas!
- AAA & Indie Game Development – Having worked on both major AAA projects and indie titles, Dan has experienced the highs and lows of game development first hand.
One of his fondest game development memories? Mushroom Men, a quirky, creative platformer that became a passion project for the entire team—featuring music from none other than Les Claypool of Primus!
Joel – The Master of Game Worlds
Next up is Joel, who joins as an Executive Producer at Fateless Games. He describes his career as a mix of game design, writing, and production, with a journey spanning some of the most recognizable names in the industry:
- Started in QA at Origin Systems before moving into lead design roles.
- Worked on legendary franchises like Ultima, Wing Commander, EverQuest, and Need for Speed.
- Led the EverQuest Team at Sony Online Entertainment – A dream job for someone who had poured hundreds of hours into MMOs as a player!
One of his favorite projects? Privateer—a game that let players experience the thrill of being a space-traveling Han Solo-like rogue, complete with trading, piracy, and deep open-world freedom.
Damon – The Tech Art Wizard
Rounding out the new recruits is Damon, an artist, technical wizard, and all-around creative force. Like Joel, he got his start at Origin Systems, working on Wing Commander Armada and Ultima 9 before moving to Sony Online Entertainment.
- Designed the iconic Star Wars Galaxies character customization system.
- Worked on Mushroom Men, Ghostbusters, and TMNT at Red Fly Studio.
- Built one of the best face-rigging systems for character animation.
One of his most fun experiences? Being part of the Mushroom Men team and seeing Les Claypool not only compose the soundtrack but also build a custom bass guitar for the project!
Biggest Takeaways from the Podcast

Passion > Money in Game Development
The team shared hard-earned wisdom about what makes a great game studio. Dan put it perfectly:
“If you’re only in it for the money, your studio won’t last more than two years. But if you’re passionate, the sky’s the limit.”
They all agreed that big-budget studios often fail because they lack creative heart, while small, dedicated teams like the one at Fateless Games have the power to create something truly special.
The Industry is Changing – And Godforge is a Breath of Fresh Air
With layoffs, studio closures, and corporate takeovers dominating gaming news, all three guests expressed their excitement about joining Fateless Games a studio that actually values creativity and player passion.
“This project feels different. It’s driven by people who love the genre and want to make something great.” – Joel
What Hero Would You Add to Godforge?
One of the best moments in the episode came when Brad asked the team:
“If you could add any hero to Godforge, who would it be?”
- Joel: Michael Moorcock’s Elric – The legendary albino warrior with his cursed black sword, Stormbringer.
- Damon: Eris – The Greek goddess of chaos and discord, an overlooked but fascinating character.
- Dan: Pumpkinhead – Because who doesn’t love a terrifying, supernatural monster?
Final Thoughts – More War Stories to Come?
As the podcast wrapped up, Brad hinted at another episode in the future, diving into even more behind-the-scenes stories from Star Wars Galaxies, Wing Commander, and other legendary games.
In fact, Dan teased a cringeworthy, Office-style story about meeting George Lucas—something we absolutely need to hear next time!
