The Five Pillars of a Great RPG: Lessons from Fateless

When designing an RPG, there are a few critical elements that must be nailed to create a compelling experience. At Fateless, our first title is shaping up to be a role-playing, hero-collector RPG, and as we delve into the core mechanics, we’ve identified five key areas that make or break an RPG.

Whether you’re a developer or an RPG fan, these five pillars define what makes a game immersive, engaging, and long-lasting.

1. A Gripping Storyline

At the heart of any RPG lies the storyline. A truly great RPG captures players' imaginations, just like classic tabletop RPGs such as Dungeons & Dragons. These games thrive on storytelling, where an evolving narrative filled with twists and turns keeps players invested.

Look at the most iconic RPG stories - whether it's the rich lore of The Lord of the Rings, the dramatic transformations of characters like Gandalf, or the sprawling, immersive world of World of Warcraft. These games and films hold players for hours because of their compelling narratives. If an RPG can't sustain player engagement for 30-40 hours, it risks failing in today’s competitive market.

This is one of the reasons why Fateless is working with a top-tier IP, ensuring we have a rich lore to build upon. Tapping into players’ nostalgia and familiarity with established worlds will create an emotional connection that enhances the game’s depth and longevity.

2. Engaging Character Collection

Character collection is a core mechanic in many modern RPGs, particularly in hero collector games. The thrill of unlocking and upgrading characters has always been a driving force in gaming - just think back to opening Magic: The Gathering card packs as a kid. The excitement of collecting, upgrading, and optimizing heroes has to be executed well for an RPG to succeed.

Fateless is prioritizing depth in our character design. Players won’t just be collecting heroes; they’ll be customizing them with valuable items, ensuring each character evolves uniquely. Factions and class diversity, such as dwarves, elves, or powerful magicians, will add layers of strategy, allowing players to experiment with different team compositions and play styles.

3. Immersive Locations and Soundtrack

A great RPG doesn’t just tell a story - it transports players into another world. Location design plays a huge role in making an RPG feel alive. The world needs to be diverse, with distinct environments that evoke different emotions and challenges. For example, a dwarven mountain should feel rugged and oppressive, whereas an elvish forest should feel vibrant and full of life.

Sound design is just as crucial. Think about the way music intensifies before a boss fight, signaling danger and excitement. One of the best examples of immersive world-building is Game of Thrones. Each setting in the series had a unique aesthetic and atmosphere that immediately conveyed its tone. Similarly, RPGs must use sound and visuals to make players feel the difference between each environment, heightening immersion and excitement.

4. A Strategic and Dynamic Battle System

Since Fateless is developing a turn-based RPG, the battle system has to be engaging enough to sustain long-term play. The challenge with turn-based combat is ensuring it remains fresh and strategic, rather than repetitive.

Several factors can make turn-based battles engaging:

  • Varied character abilities and animations – Each character should feel unique, with distinct skills that evolve as they level up.
  • Different battle environments – Fighting in a standard campaign dungeon should feel different from battling in PVP or clan wars.
  • Dynamic boss fights – Encounters should feel unique, with special mechanics that challenge players to adapt their strategies.
  • New battle modes – Introducing special challenges, such as world bosses or draft-style character selection, can keep gameplay fresh and exciting.

The goal is to ensure that even though the core mechanics remain turn-based, the experience continually evolves, keeping players engaged for the long haul.

5. Rewarding Progression and Collection

The best RPGs make every achievement feel meaningful. Whether it’s obtaining a powerful new character, equipping a legendary weapon, or unlocking a faction-exclusive ability, players need to feel a sense of progression. Collecting items and characters should be as exciting as the battles themselves.

Fateless aims to create a rewarding collection system where players always feel like they’re working toward something valuable. Whether through deep customization, faction bonuses, or rare items, we want to give players the satisfaction of progression, making every decision matter.

Final Thoughts

Designing a great RPG is about balancing storytelling, character depth, world-building, combat, and progression. At Fateless, these five pillars are guiding our development, ensuring our first title delivers an experience that resonates with RPG fans worldwide.
