Unleashing the Beasts: Creature Designs in Godforge

If you’re a fan of mythical creatures, legendary beasts, and folklore-inspired monstrosities, then buckle up because Godforge is bringing them to life in stunning detail! Simon from Fateless recently took us behind the scenes of the game’s creature design process, giving us an exciting look at how these supernatural beings evolve from concept to 3D models. Let’s dive in!

Myth and Legend Brought to Life

In Godforge, mythology, legends, and folklore from various cultures are at the core of creature design. Approximately 15% of the collectible champions will be some form of creature, and that doesn’t even include the powerful bosses players will face. The development team is crafting everything from dark and mysterious jackals to towering dragons, all with a unique twist that fits the game’s aesthetic.

Simon walked us through the process of transforming these creatures from rough concepts into full-fledged in-game models, introducing the talented artists responsible for these awe-inspiring designs.

The Jackal – A Common Hero with an Uncommon Look

jackal concept

The jackal is one of the game’s common heroes, but don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s ordinary. The team started with a simple concept that initially felt too cartoony for Godforge’s dark and immersive world. They quickly shifted gears, reimagining the jackal with a necromantic, ominous design.

Enter Dane, one of the lead concept artists, who sketched over the existing design to infuse it with strength and presence. The goal was clear: make it feel like a true beast of battle. Armor elements were incorporated to add an extra layer of intimidation.

The 3D sculpting process, handled by Mikela, brought these ideas to life. In just two days, she had created two versions of the jackal,. One with standard dog-like proportions and another with a bulkier, more dynamic physique. As details like skeletal structures, muscle definition, and armor pieces were refined, the jackal took its final form—a formidable warrior of the shadows.

Geri the Wolf and the Evolution of Creature Modeling

While discussing canines, Simon revisited a previous creation: Geri, the wolf. Geri showcases how early 3D blockouts evolve into incredibly detailed models. Scarred fur, realistic musculature, and carefully crafted textures bring the wolf to life in a way that proves Godforge is committed to high-quality creature design.

The Satyr – Versatility in Creature Bases

satyr concept

Another creature in the works is the Satyr. The team needed a versatile base model that could be used for multiple heroes while allowing for significant variation. This is a common approach in game development, as it allows for streamlined animation and efficient asset creation.

Dane explored several body types, sketching out different possibilities. Could this base also be used for werewolves, lizard-men, or gargoyle-like creatures? The answer was a resounding yes. The solution? A stronger, more adaptable mesh that could support numerous variations.

Esther then took the design and refined it, presenting side profiles and muscular adjustments to ensure the satyr had the perfect blend of agility and power. Once finalized, this base will serve as the foundation for multiple different creatures in the game.

Horus – The Mysterious Warrior

One of the most fascinating designs is Horus, an enigmatic champion that blurs the line between warrior and beast. Is he a masked human? A fully-fledged avian entity? The team wanted to keep that ambiguity, ensuring that Horus maintained a mystical, almost otherworldly presence.

The design process started with Alex, then transitioned to Dane, who added fiercer talons and an enhanced mask design. Esther took the final refinements and polished the look, incorporating stunning armor, weapon details, and even back-view sketches to aid the 3D modeling process.

Enter Andre, the 3D sculpting wizard. Even in its early grayscale phase, Horus exudes raw power and divine energy. Adjustments were made, sharper beaks, stronger postures, until Horus truly embodied the spirit of an unstoppable avian warrior.

The Dragon – A True Apex Beast

Y draig goch initial design

Of course, no mythology-driven game would be complete without a dragon, and Godforge is delivering one that will dominate the battlefield.

The Welsh-inspired dragon, Y Ddraig Goch, was initially conceptualized by Dane, who wanted a presence-heavy, muscular design. Esther then expanded on these ideas, refining the wings, enhancing the silhouette, and ensuring the design was worthy of a legendary beast.

Mikela, the 3D creature specialist, took on the immense task of sculpting this dragon. Even in its early stages, the model showcases wingspan proportions, body mass, and animation potential. Simon emphasized that capturing these details early is crucial—mistakes at this stage could cause major problems when it comes to rigging, animation, and in-game interactions.

What’s Next?

Creatures are coming in full force to Godforge, making up around 15-20% of the total champions. Whether it’s jackals, wolves, satyrs, avian warriors, or dragons, the team is ensuring that every beast in the game is crafted with meticulous attention to detail.

Now, it’s over to you! What creatures from mythology and legend do you want to see in Godforge?
