The Strongest Ally Protection Champs in Raid Shadow Legends
In this guide, we explore the importance of Ally Protection champions in Raid Shadow Legends. We break down how the buff works, why it plays such a crucial role in your team’s survival, which champions apply it most effectively, and where you’ll get the most value from using it.
What Ally Protection Does in Raid

How the Ally Protection Buff Works
Ally Protection redirects either 25% or 50% of the damage an ally would receive to the Champion who applied the buff. This makes it one of the most powerful defensive mechanics in the game, capable of massively reducing incoming damage across your team. The downside, however, is that the protecting Champion can end up taking large amounts of damage, especially when covering multiple allies against heavy AoE attacks.
A particularly dangerous interaction happens when an enemy steals Ally Protection. Even after being stolen, the damage is still redirected to the original Champion who placed the buff. That means your own team can end up damaging their ally whenever they attack the enemy holding the stolen buff. Be especially careful in Hydra and Chimera battles, as the Head of Mischief and the Viper Form are both capable of stealing buffs, which can quickly lead to an unexpected death on your team.
Why Ally Protection Is Important
Ally Protection reduces incoming damage on weaker champions by redirecting a portion of the damage they take onto the champion providing the Ally Protection buff. Instead of one vulnerable champion taking the full impact of an attack, the damage is shared, helping protect squishier allies from being quickly defeated. This makes teams much more stable during heavy incoming damage, especially when the protecting champion is built tanky enough to absorb the redirected damage safely.
The Strange Interaction with C.DMG
One of the strangest mechanics tied to Ally Protection is how redirected critical damage is calculated. Instead of scaling from the original attacker’s C.DMG%, the redirected damage uses the protecting Champion’s C.DMG% stat instead.
This leads to a few important interactions:
- Ally Protection becomes even stronger against enemies with extremely high C.DMG%, which is most noticeable in PvP battles.
- Building C.DMG% on your protector will significantly increase the amount of redirected damage they receive.
Because of this, you generally want to avoid adding any C.DMG% to your Ally Protector unless there is a specific reason to do so, such as enabling a Block Damage strategy, reaching a required stat threshold for Chimera, or supporting a niche build.
Why Ally Protection Champions Are Valuable

Surviving High Damage Attacks
Ally Protection is especially powerful against hard hitting attacks that would otherwise threaten fragile damage dealers. In encounters where squishy Champions are at risk of being taken down, reducing their incoming damage by 50% can completely change the outcome of a run. In many cases, this level of protection is the key difference between a failed attempt and a smooth, successful clear.
Bosses and PvP
Ally Protection shines most in boss encounters and PvP content, although using it effectively in PvP is far more demanding. For the majority of players, the three Clan Boss battles – Demon Lord, Hydra, and Chimera – are where Ally Protection sees the most consistent value.
Faction Wars is another excellent use case, especially when your faction roster is limited or lacks reliable revival options. In these situations, keeping every Champion alive becomes extremely important, making Ally Protection a strong defensive option.
Boss encounters are generally easier to build around because you can customize your team specifically for that fight. PvP, on the other hand, is much less predictable due to the wide variety of enemy compositions and the frequent presence of Remove Buff abilities. To make Ally Protection work consistently in Arena, you will often need very specialized Champions, many of which are highlighted below, alongside strong gear setups such as Protection sets.
Tips for Using Ally Protection Champions

Protect the Ally Protector
Your protector will often be absorbing large amounts of incoming damage, so keeping them alive is absolutely critical. If the protecting Champion is defeated, Ally Protection immediately falls off and the rest of your team becomes exposed to full incoming damage. Strong defensive stats, healing, shielding, or additional protection effects are often necessary to ensure your protector can survive the attacks.
Combine With Healing and Shields
Shields are one of the best ways to increase the survival of your protector, allowing them to withstand far more redirected damage before being defeated. Reliable healing is equally important, since damage will often break through the shield and chip away at their actual HP over time.
Buffs such as Block Damage and Unkillable can also be incredibly effective for keeping your protector alive. When active, they allow the Champion to absorb huge amounts of redirected damage with little risk. The main drawback is their typically low uptime, so it’s important to recover your protector’s HP while those buffs are active, otherwise they may be taken down once the protection expires.

Krisk the Ageless

Krisk brings an incredible amount of buffs and debuffs to the team, including Increase SPD and Ally Protection, while also offering unique value as one of the best Mischief Tanks for Hydra. Thanks to his many self buffs, he can reliably draw Mischief’s attacks with a high RES build to prevent Buff Steals, while simultaneously debuffing enemies when hit and controlling targets like the Head of Decay through Provoke.
He can also increase the duration of ally buffs, making him a strong addition to teams that rely on maintaining high buff uptime, such as Increase RES compositions.
Skullcrusher

Skullcrusher is a classic Epic in Raid, bringing a team Counterattack buff alongside Ally Protection on a 3 turn cooldown. His self buff Unkillable allows him to easily survive the redirected damage from protecting allies, making him exceptionally strong for prolonged fights. He also enables unique team compositions for Demon Lord Clan Boss, especially within Counterattack setups, making him a highly valuable progression champion if you’re lucky enough to pull him early on.
Miscreated Monster

Miscreated Monster is an OG protector, bringing strong self healing, crowd control, and team protection. His AoE attacks allow him to place Stuns on enemies, while also generating huge Shields for allies based on the damage dealt, making him especially effective against encounters like Spider, where there are many enemies to hit. Alongside his survivability and control, he also remains a solid option for early to mid game Arena progression thanks to his ability to disrupt enemies while keeping the team protected.
Leonardo

Leonardo is a perfect example of a champion who blends strong damage with team support. He can apply Increase DEF and Ally Protection for the team, while placing Unkillable and Counterattack on himself to stay in the fight and deal consistent damage.
His A3 is where his power truly shines, once Unity is enabled alongside other Turtles, the skill scales significantly, can activate when allies drop below 50% HP, and increases in damage based on enemy buffs. If he secures a kill, he also removes those buffs, making him a powerful option for both damage and control.
Toragi the Frog

Toragi the Frog is arguably the most versatile Epic Champion on this list, offering a mix of protection, control, and sustain. His Ally Protection skill also provides a strong team Shield alongside substantial self healing, helping him recover from the heavy redirected damage he absorbs.
Beyond that, he brings an AoE Provoke for wave control, a Decrease ATK on his A1 for boss encounters, and a passive that steadily applies Poisons for extra damage over time. Thanks to the amount of utility packed into his kit, Toragi is a strong accessible option for most content where keeping your team alive is a priority.
Sniktraak

Sniktraak is a heavily underrated champion who brings a strong mix of buffs, debuffs, and team protection. His kit revolves around Reflect Damage, making him especially valuable for Chimera Clan Boss, where he can help enable several Trials almost by himself.
He also provides Ally Protection for the team, an AoE Decrease SPD to slow enemies down, and a Shield that becomes protected when enemies are under Leech – which can be triggered through his passive or applied by allies. This combination of protection, utility, and debuff support makes him a fantastic all round support champion.
Gladewulf

Gladewulf is a solid Rare recently added to the game, bringing Ally Protection to a new level for budget teams. He places the stronger version of the buff alongside self buffing Counterattack, while also bringing a large Decrease SPD on his A1 to help control enemies. His A2 provides a Provoke for additional crowd control, and his passive adds extra survivability to help him withstand incoming damage while protecting the team. Although his base stats are somewhat low, he remains an great progression.
Korugar

Korugar is able to apply both Ally Protection and Strengthen to all allies through the same skill, alongside an A2 that boosts ally Turn Meters while removing debuffs from them. This makes him an easy fit into most areas of the game thanks to his blend of damage mitigation, improved turn cycling, and ability to counter debuff heavy encounters.
Passively, he also enhances the stats of allies under his protection, while counterattacking whenever protected allies are hit. This synergises well with his A1, allowing him to trigger additional self healing and maintain his HP.
Lugan

Lugan has become a much better champion following his buffs, now able to apply Increase DEF, Ally Protection, and Shields to all allies through the same skill. Combined with his ability to place Block Active Skills for control, decrease enemy buff durations, and deal some damage, he becomes a strong hybrid support option across a variety of wave & boss content.
He can also counterattack whenever allies under a Shield are hit, leading to more opportunities to trigger his Stun A1, while his damage scales based on the number of buffs he has placed on the team.
Niamhe

Niamhe is an absolutely dominant champion in the PvP meta thanks to placing Block Damage at the start of the fight, completely shutting down many damage dealers until the buff expires. This passive also allows her to effectively build a 9-piece Protection set, an ideal setup for Ally Protectors in PvP, which further strengthens her Ally Protection and Block Debuffs buffs.
How to Build Ally Protection Champions

Health and Defence Requirements
The top priority when building an Ally Protection Champion is stacking as much HP as possible. Since they will be absorbing a huge amount of redirected damage, a massive HP pool is essential to keep them alive through heavy hits and sustained pressure.
DEF is still valuable for reducing direct incoming damage, but in most situations HP% should take priority whenever you have the option. The larger your protector’s health pool, the more effectively they can handle protecting the rest of the team.
Speed and ACC/RES Requirements
SPD is one of the single most important stats in Raid Shadow Legends. However, Ally Protection Champions are often built with lower Speed than many other roles because their defensive stat requirements are so demanding. If your protector’s role is purely defensive, they can usually afford to run at a more moderate Speed – generally just fast enough to stay ahead of the enemy team. Hybrid protectors, on the other hand, often need extra Speed so they can consistently cycle important debuffs or utility skills.
For hybrid builds that rely on debuffs or other negative effects, you’ll also need enough ACC to land them reliably. Be sure to check our Raid Stages Tool for the specific Accuracy requirements of each encounter.
Certain protectors, such as Krisk, can also be built with very high RES to avoid dangerous debuffs entirely. These builds tend to be much more gear intensive, so we recommend checking the individual Champion guides for more detailed setup recommendations.
Recommended Artifact Sets
Gear sets that improve survivability are excellent choices, especially in the early and mid game:
- Regeneration is a classic option, providing strong healing every turn to help your protector recover from redirected damage.
- Guardian offers a smaller heal but adds its own damage sharing effect, making it a fantastic alternative if your Champion can comfortably survive while wearing it.
- Immortal is an easy 2 piece set that grants extra HP alongside healing, making it a very solid filler option.
- Stalwart is another strong mid game choice, particularly for reducing incoming AoE damage in difficult encounters.
For more advanced builds, most players will eventually transition into powerful 9-piece sets:
- Protection is one of the best options for buff heavy Champions, increasing your team’s damage for every active buff while also protecting those buffs from removal or theft.
- Feral is an excellent alternative for debuff focused Champions, granting a damage increase based on the number of debuffs placed on enemies.
Tips for using Ally Protection Champions

Ally Protection Champions can completely support your team’s survivability, but they require proper support to perform consistently. Since they absorb a portion of incoming damage, pairing them with reliable healing is extremely important – especially if they lack built in sustain. Continuous healing, Shields, and recovery effects can dramatically increase their survival during longer fights.
Defensive buffs such as Increase DEF, Strengthen, Block Damage, and Unkillable are all incredibly valuable alongside Ally Protection, helping reduce or completely block the redirected damage they receive.Building your protector correctly is just as important as team support. Prioritize high HP above everything else, while still maintaining enough DEF to reduce direct incoming hits. Avoid stacking unnecessary C.DMG%, as this can significantly increase the redirected critical damage they take.
Finally, be mindful of buff removal and buff stealing mechanics in difficult content such as Hydra, Chimera, or PvP. Losing Ally Protection at the wrong moment – or having it stolen by an enemy, can quickly turn a stable run into a bad result.
