How HP Burn Damage The Spider Boss

The Spider Dungeon is one of the best encounters for HP Burn, as there can be up to 11 enemies in the fight. This allows the debuff to generate massive amounts of splash damage – every time a spiderling takes a turn, it triggers a 3% MAX HP hit onto the main Spider, rapidly wearing it down.

In Hard difficulty, however, the Spider becomes significantly faster, which can make this strategy less reliable. As a result, many teams shift towards using HP Burn activation champions. While these are rare, they can instantly trigger HP Burn ticks, allowing you to deal burst damage without needing to wait for the spiderlings to take their turns.

Why Spider Teams Use HP Burn

Teams utilise HP Burn in the Spider Dungeon due to the number of target’s present, allowing you to place the debuff onto the spiderlings and trigger splash damage each time they take a turn. By avoiding heavy AoE damage and instead building around Turn Meter control and crowd control, you can prevent the boss from taking turns while HP Burn steadily deals the majority of the damage. This can then be complemented by single-target abilities, such as Enemy MAX HP skills, to further speed up the run.

How the Spider boss mechanics work

Spiderlings and the boss interaction

The first challenge your team faces is the stream of spiderlings summoned by the boss. Six spawn at the start of the fight, with additional spiderlings appearing following turns, up to a cap of 10. The main Spider will then consume them on her next turn, healing herself and gaining increased ATK for each one consumed. Because of this, controlling Turn Meter and Speed is crucial to prevent her from taking turns and benefiting from these effects.

In the early stages, you may be able to simply kill the spiderlings before they are consumed. However, as difficulty increases, shifting to an HP Burn and control-based strategy becomes far more effective – especially if you lack the top tier Enemy MAX HP champions to burst the boss down. If left unchecked, the spiderlings can quickly overwhelm your team, so having the right support, control, and defensive effects in place is essential for surviving the encounter.

Why controlling the fight matters

If you’re able to maintain control over both the spiderlings and the boss, the fight can quickly shift in your favour. Slowing the boss with Decrease SPD and Turn Meter reduction, while using AoE control like Stun or Freeze on the spiderlings, allows you to safely set up HP Burn and trigger consistent splash damage without taking hits in return.

This creates a loop of control and safety for your team. As long as the boss is prevented from taking turns and consuming spiderlings for healing, the combination of HP Burn and any additional damage will steadily wear Skavag down, leading to a much more reliable run.

Champions that support HP burn strategies

Crowd Control champions

The most effective forms of control come from debuffs like Stun, Freeze, True Fear, Provoke, and Taunt, either completely preventing spiderlings from taking turns or directing their attacks toward a durable target. For example, pairing a champion like Ambassador Lethelin with Drexthar Bloodtwin allows you to funnel attacks into him, increasing the chances of triggering his passive to apply HP Burn.

While the spiderlings are controlled, HP Burn can safely trigger its splash damage without your team taking hits in return. It’s important, however, to ensure your control champion isn’t built to outright kill the spiderlings, as this would reduce the effectiveness of your HP Burn strategy. Champions like Lady Mikage or Gliseah Soulguide are great examples of strong control without excessive damage.

Turn Meter control champions

Multiple sources of Turn Meter control become much more important beyond Stage 20, as the boss gains Almighty Persistence, reducing the effectiveness of Turn Meter reduction by 50%. Because of this, champions who can fully deplete or steal Turn Meter are ideal, such as Coldheart, who also brings strong Enemy MAX HP damage.

Pair this with Decrease SPD to further limit the boss’s ability to take turns, and when using AoE Turn Meter control, consider champions who don’t deal excessive damage – such as Lyssandra or Psylar, to maintain control without accidentally killing spiderlings and losing HP Burn value. It’s worth noting that on Hard difficulty, the Spider is immune to both Turn Meter and Speed control.

Support Champions

Bringing allies who can apply Block Debuffs to prevent poisons if you do take hits, alongside protective effects like Shields, cleansing, and revives, are all excellent options if the spiderlings aren’t fully controlled. This helps your less durable champions survive incoming damage, or be brought back at crucial moments if they fall – especially in situations where the boss isn’t fully under control.

Skraank

As a Void champion, he remains effective across all stages as you progress. His A2 places HP Burn on all enemies. However, he can hit surprisingly hard for an Epic, so you’ll want to be mindful of building too much damage, especially for Spider , so you don’t accidentally kill the spiderlings and lose out on valuable HP Burn ticks.

Akoth

Players can obtain this champion by clearing Normal Doom Tower Secret Rooms, and they offer strong value as an HP Burn specialist. Akoth’s A2 gains an additional 20% chance to place HP Burn for each alive enemy, making encounters like the Spider Dungeon – where multiple spiderlings are present, ideal for consistent application. This is further supported by their ability to place Shields on allies, alongside a passive that can apply Fear, providing both survivability and control.

Sicia

Not only can Sicia place HP Burn on all enemies for 3 turns, but she can also follow up with her A2 to instantly activate one tick of burns for immediate damage. She also brings Decrease DEF and Weaken to enhance your team’s damage against the main boss, while extending the duration of HP Burns with the A1.

Drexthar

Stages 20 and 24 both favour Drexthar’s affinity, meaning if he’s your only Force champion, the spiderlings will naturally target him – further supported by his A2 Provoke to actively draw attacks in. This works perfectly with his passive, allowing him to apply HP Burn to attackers, and with the right team support to keep him alive, he can steadily wear the boss down over time.

Artak

The interaction between Geomancer’s A3 and passive has stood the test of time since his release. His A3 fully depletes a target’s Turn Meter while placing HP Burn and Weaken, setting up his passive to deflect damage back at the boss. How to build hp burn champions for spider

Accuracy & Speed

The most important stat for HP Burn champions is Accuracy, as you’ll need enough to consistently land your debuffs. As a general rule, aim for around 25 Accuracy higher than the enemy’s Resistance. You can use our Raid Stages Tool to check specific requirements for each stage – for example, in Spider 20, you’ll want around 225 Accuracy, alongside enough Speed to keep up with both the boss and the spiderlings.

Reccomended Artifact Sets

Any gear sets that provide Accuracy or Speed are ideal, such as Speed, Perception, or Feral, helping you consistently land debuffs while taking more turns. Sets like Reflex are also valuable for reducing cooldowns, allowing you to apply HP Burn more frequently, while Relentless can grant extra turns, helping you cycle back into key abilities faster during progression.

tips for beating the spider with HP burn teams

To beat the Spider’s Den, focus on controlling both the boss and spiderlings while using HP Burn as your primary damage source. Apply HP Burn across the spiderlings so each of their turns triggers splash damage onto the boss, and avoid heavy AoE damage that would kill them prematurely. Use strong crowd control like Stun, Freeze, Provoke, or Taunt to prevent spiderlings from attacking or to redirect them into a durable champion like Drexthar to trigger additional Burns.

Pair this with Turn Meter and Speed control to stop the boss from taking turns and consuming spiderlings to heal. As you progress, especially into higher stages or Hard Mode where Turn Meter control is limited, prioritise HP Burn activation champions for burst damage. Ensure your team has enough Accuracy to land debuffs and the survivability to withstand pressure, creating a stable loop where Burns steadily wear the boss down for a consistent and reliable clear.
