Is Bohdan Still Worth Building After the Nerf?
Balancing is always one of the most controversial parts of any alpha. One day you’ve got a hero absolutely dominating content, the next they’re getting a reality check. Sound familiar? That’s exactly what happened with Bohdan in Void Hunters. Considered as the near-unstoppable solo machine, recent balance changes have shaken things up, but the big question remains: is Bohdan still worth your investment?
Let’s break it all down, from his pre-nerf dominance to how he performs now, and what you need to make him shine.
Bohdan Before the Nerf: A Solo Powerhouse

Before the changes Bohdan was, quite simply, ridiculous. If you had him built, you could throw him into any content solo and expect top tier performance.
His kit revolves around 2 things. The first is scaling his own power through Overconfidence stacks. Each one boosting his Attack and Focus while trading off defensive stats. Normally, that kind of trade off would be risky, but not for Bohdan. Why? Because of the second part of his kit. His ability to self sustain and counter attack when hit, completely offset the downside.
The real star of the show was his “I Can Take Them All” passive. This gave him a extremely high counterattack chance and far higher than intended. As a result Bohdan would constantly strike back at enemies, shredding waves before they had a chance to recover. Combine that with aforementioned self healing and AoE basics, what you had was a hero who didn’t just survive, he thrived.
In fact, many players were using him to solo high end challenge content, pushing rankings with minimal team support. When one hero starts replacing entire squads, you know balance changes are coming.
The Problem: Too Strong or Completely Useless?
Here is the tricky part with heroes like Bohdan. His design leans heavily into extremes.
He is built to scale aggressively when alone. That means if his numbers are too high, he becomes unstoppable. But if they are tuned down too far, he risks falling off completely. That is always the tightrope with solo centric kits.
And in alpha, where systems and interactions are still being refined, things like incorrect scaling or bugged values can massively amplify power. In Bohdan’s case, his counter rate was not functioning as intended, which contributed to pushing him way over the edge.
So, the nerf was not a surprise. The real test is how he feels now.
What Changed in the Patch?

The adjustments to Bohdan were targeted but impactful.
First, his healing was reduced. This directly affects his ability to sustain himself in prolonged fights. This alone makes solo runs riskier, especially in tougher encounters.
Second, his passive scaling was adjusted. Instead of 25% bonus per empty ally slot, his bonuses now sit at more reasonable 15% per missing ally. This means less raw stat gain and a more controlled power curve.
And finally, the big one, his counterattack rate was brought down to intended levels.
This change alone dramatically alters how he plays. Previously, Bohdan could rely on constant counters to deal damage and maintain pressure. Now, those counters are less frequent, meaning fights take longer and require more careful planning.
Bohdan Now: Still Strong
So, where does that leave him?
Short answer, Bohdan is still very good. Just no longer absurd without investment.
He can still clear challenging content and remains viable in solo scenarios, but it is no longer a guaranteed win. You will notice the difference immediately in tougher stages, where survivability becomes more of a concern.
In challenge modes, players are still finding success with him, but they aren’t pushing quite as high as they were, especially lower level ones. This wont come as a shock to anyone but lower investment Bohdans struggle more, while high end builds can still push impressive results.
That is a good sign for balance overall.
Hunting Grounds: Solo Carry & Strategic Play
For me Hunting Grounds is where the biggest shift is felt.
Previously, I could drop Bohdan in solo from the start on ANY Hunting Ground and watch him carry the entire run. Now, it is a bit more nuanced.
Sometimes I feel like I need a smidge of initial team support to get things rolling. Once I pick up the right boons and scale into the run, Bohdan can still transition into a solo carry, but he needs help getting there.
Instead of brute forcing everything, I’m are now thinking about early survival, boon selection, and when I feel like its ok to tackle the harder nodes.
This may simply be due to higher difficulty Hunting Grounds and me not levelling him as much. But it certainly feels like a healthier gameplay loop overall.
Boons That Make Things Easier

If you want Bohdan to feel incredible post nerf, it is very easy depending on boon synergy.
Certain boons can bring him right back to life and even recreate parts of his old power.
Here are some standout effects to look for.
Counter Boosting Boons
Anything that increases counterattack chance is huge. These directly compensate for the nerf and restore his reactive damage playstyle. There are two to look out for, one gives him a flat 50% counter rate. The other gives him +20% counter chance per missing ally.
Lone Wolf
Gives him bonuses that scale with missing or defeated allies are perfect for Bohdan. This gives him back his old passive and more! Amplifying his core identity and make solo play viable again.
Stat Conversion Boons
Effects like gaining Attack based on HP or Defense based on Attack can create powerful scaling loops. Stack enough of these and Bohdan becomes incredibly efficient.
Healing and Survivability Tools
With the reduced healing in his base kit, external sources like invulnerability triggers or life drain become very welcome additions.
Debuff Synergy
AoE basics combined with debuff application can deal massive damage over time, especially in longer fights. Look out for “applies 2 random DoTs when dealing damage” and combine it with “Deals Max HP damage when applying debuffs”
Does He Struggle Anywhere?
For me it’s not all smooth sailing.
For me in certain high difficulty encounters, especially those with heavy burst damage or healing reduction effects, shut my Bohdan down quickly. Without consistent counters and strong sustain, he can fall behind.
It might be the level of mine but there are also scenarios where pure solo play just is not viable anymore, and forcing it will lead to failure.
And honestly, that is okay.
Not every hero should trivialize all content.
Final Verdict: Should You Build Bohdan?
Absolutely. Bohdan is still worth building.
He remains one of the most unique and rewarding heroes in Void Hunters, offering a playstyle that feels completely different from standard team based compositions.
But before he can carry you, he needs the investment more than ever.
With decent gear and smart boon choices, Bohdan can still dominate runs and push high end content. He just asks a little more from you as a player.
And in many ways, that makes him even more fun.
