What Is the Magma Dragon?

Doom Tower

The Magma Dragon is a boss encountered across Rotations 1 and 2 of the Doom Tower, as well as throughout stages of the Cursed City. Kuldath’s mechanics revolve heavily around HP Burn and Hex, with Hexed Champions becoming particularly vulnerable as his attacks can ignore their DEF alongside protective effects such as Shields, Block Damage, and Unkillable.

The key mechanic that separates Kuldath from many other bosses is his vulnerability to Provoke. Keeping the boss consistently Provoked forces him to rely on his basic attack, preventing access to the dangerous skills that place HP Burn and Hex. This makes reliable Provoke placement, enough Accuracy, and keeping your Provoker sustained the foundation of the most consistent strategies.

Kuldath drops Magma Cores, the Forge material used to craft Fatal gear, so if you’re looking to farm this set, building a consistent team becomes important for repeated clears. Keeping Kuldath under Provoke allows your damage dealers to steadily wear him down, while support Champions can enhance your damage or protect and sustain the team if the boss manages to break free from the Provoke cycle.

Understanding the Magma Dragon’s Skills

provokers

Brand with Weakness

Kuldath attacks a single enemy and reduces their Turn Meter by 50%, prioritising any Champion under Hex. This makes Hexed allies particularly vulnerable, as they’ll naturally become the focus of his attacks (unless the boss is Provoked) while also being exposed to the dangerous effects of Lethal Lava.

Overburn

Overburn attacks your entire team and instantly activates any HP Burn debuffs currently placed on them, before reducing their duration by 1 turn. Allowing HP Burns to stack across your team can therefore lead to a large burst of damage when this skill comes around.

Stoke the Flames

Kuldath attacks all enemies and places HP Burn for 3 turns, before stealing 10% Turn Meter from every Champion affected by HP Burn. He then places an irresistible and unblockable Hex on your lowest HP Champion, setting them up for his following attacks. (Blocking or resisting the HP Burns is ideal)

Lethal Lava (P)

Lethal Lava makes Hex particularly dangerous, allowing Kuldath to ignore 100% DEF alongside Shield, Block Damage, and Unkillable when attacking Hexed Champions. Cleansing Hex doesn’t completely solve the problem either, as removing it immediately places a new Hex on another Champion.

You should also avoid placing HP Burn on Kuldath, as he’ll instantly remove it and replace it with a 15% Continuous Heal for 2 turns, instead helping him recover HP.

Invincible Scales (P)

Kuldath is immune to most traditional forms of crowd control. Provoke is the key exception, making it the primary way to control him and prevent access to his more dangerous active skills.

Almighty Strength (P)

Enemy MAX HP attacks remain effective for dealing damage, but each hit is capped at 10% of Kuldath’s MAX HP. Multi hit Enemy MAX HP skills can therefore still provide strong boss damage while your Provoker maintains control.

Additional Immunities

Kuldath is immune to Decrease SPD and Turn Meter reduction, removing two methods of controlling boss turns. Poison damage is also reduced by 90%, making Poison significantly less effective against him. With other major crowd control effects blocked, Provoke is the main control effect he’s vulnerable to.

Building Out Your Team

The Magma Dragon is one of the easier bosses to build a team around, mainly because maintaining a consistent Provoke loop locks him into his A1 and prevents him from accessing his more dangerous active skills. With reliable Provoke placement, much of the encounter can be controlled while your team focuses on dealing damage.

Below are some key roles to consider, whether that’s multiple Provoke Champions to maintain the control cycle, additional support in case Kuldath manages to use an active skill, or strong damage dealers to wear him down while he’s locked into his A1.

Provoker

A consistent Provoker is the foundation of a reliable Magma Dragon team, keeping Kuldath locked into his A1 and preventing access to his active skills. Bringing multiple Provoke Champions can make this even safer, allowing them to alternate their skills and maintain the debuff if one Champion’s Provoke is unavailable.

Defensive Support

Support champions provide an important safety net whenever Kuldath manages to attack your team. Effects such as Block Debuffs, Shields, Increase DEF, and Ally Protection can reduce the impact of his attacks, helping keep your team sustained until Provoke is reapplied.

Damage Dealers

Strong boss damage dealers are important for quickly wearing Kuldath down while your Provokers keep him under control. Champions with powerful raw or Enemy MAX HP attacks can significantly reduce clear times, allowing your control and support Champions to focus on maintaining a safe and consistent run.

Healer/Reviver

Healers and revivers provide valuable sustain when your Provoker or other allies take heavy damage from Kuldath’s attacks. As you progress into harder stages, his damage becomes significantly more threatening, especially without Decrease ATK, making reliable recovery and revives useful for keeping your team alive while you maintain control and wear him down.

Flex Spot / Debuffer

Your final team slot is flexible and should fill whatever your composition is missing. This could be another support Champion, a debuffer to enhance your damage or reduce incoming hits, an additional Provoker for more consistent control, or simply another damage dealer or defensive option.

Once you have the right balance of control, survivability, and strong boss damage, Kuldath becomes a far more manageable encounter.

Magma Dragon Team Example

Here are five Champions that provide core roles for a consistent Magma Dragon team, each bringing valuable effects to counter the boss’s mechanics. Rather than focusing solely on these specific Champions, use the roles they fulfil as a guide when building your own team, adapting your strategy around the Champions available on your account.

Harima

Harima is a powerful defensive damage dealer who brings several effects for the Magma Dragon. She can place Decrease ATK to reduce the boss’s damage, apply Provoke to help maintain control, and passively reduce the effectiveness of Ignore DEF effects against your team.

She can also manipulate both her own and the target’s DEF, allowing her to remain durable while dealing strong damage. This combination of control, protection, debuffs, and damage allows Harima to cover multiple important roles within the encounter.

Wixwell

Vault Keeper Wixwell Portrait

Wixwell is an excellent option for both control and support, with his double hit A1 having a 100% chance to place Provoke against bosses. This allows him to repeatedly keep Kuldath locked into his basic attack and maintain a consistent Provoke cycle. He also brings AoE Decrease ATK, buff extension, Shields, and Increase DEF, providing plenty of support to keep the team sustained while controlling the boss.

Tholin

Tholin primarily fills a damage role, while also bringing Weaken and Increase ATK to further enhance his output. His A2 ignores 50% DEF against bosses and manipulates both his own and the target’s ATK, allowing him to deal greater damage while reducing the impact of incoming hits.

His passive also prevents him from receiving critical hits, adding extra durability, while his strong damage makes him a great option for clearing the waves leading up to Kuldath.

Whisper

Whisper Portrait v2

Whisper is one of the strongest Epic boss slayers in the game, combining hard hitting single target attacks with Extra Turn potential when Kuldath is under Decrease DEF and Weaken. Her passive also increases her damage against bosses by 20%, allowing her to quickly wear him down alongside your team.

Her lower durability can leave her vulnerable if Kuldath breaks free from the Provoke cycle, making consistent control and defensive support important when using her.

Lydia

Lydia serves as the primary support option for this team, placing Decrease DEF and Weaken on Kuldath to enhance your team’s damage. She also brings Increase SPD and Strengthen to improve turn cycling and help allies withstand incoming hits. Her combination of offensive and defensive support makes her an easy fit for the Magma Dragon, as well as many other PvE encounters across the game.

Tips for taking on the Magma Dragon

  • Keep Provoke active – Maintaining a consistent Provoke cycle is the foundation of the fight, locking Kuldath into his A1 and preventing him from accessing his more dangerous active skills.
  • Consider multiple Provokers – Having two Champions capable of placing Provoke allows them to bounce off each other and maintain consistent control, unless you have a Champion capable of single handedly keeping Kuldath permanently Provoked.
  • Bring strong support – Effects such as Shields, Increase DEF, Strengthen, Ally Protection, and healing can help your team withstand incoming damage, especially if Kuldath manages to break free from the Provoke cycle.
  • Enhance your damage – Decrease DEF, Weaken, Increase ATK, and other offensive effects can significantly speed up the encounter, allowing your damage dealers to wear Kuldath down while he’s controlled.
  • Limit the HP Burns – Block Debuffs can prevent Kuldath’s HP Burns from being placed, while Increase RES or Decrease ACC can improve your chances of resisting them. This helps reduce the amount of damage your team needs to sustain throughout the fight.
  • Be careful when cleansing Hex – Cleansing HP Burn is perfectly viable, but removing Hex causes it to be redirected onto another ally. Make sure Kuldath is controlled before that Champion is attacked, or simply allow the debuffs to expire naturally if your team can safely out cycle them.
  • Bring dedicated boss damage – Strong single target damage dealers and Enemy MAX HP Champions can quickly wear Kuldath down while your Provokers maintain control, helping reduce the overall clear time.
  • Build for the stage you’re facing – Make sure your Provokers and debuffers have enough Accuracy to consistently land their effects, alongside sufficient Speed to maintain your intended turn order. Use the Stages Tool to check the requirements and waves for each difficulty before building your team.
