What Is a Speed Champion in RAID?

The Role of Speed Champions

Speed champions help teams move faster and use their abilities more often.

Some provide an immediate Turn Meter boost, while others place Increase Speed for longer-term value. They are often responsible for setting up the rest of the team.

In Arena, they help debuffers and damage dealers act before the enemy. In Hydra and Dungeons, they allow supports to maintain the upkeep of important buffs, cleanses, heals, and debuffs.

Speed is widely considered one of the most important stats in RAID because it affects how often a champion can use every part of their kit.

Different Types of Speed Champions

Each type performs a different role, so the best option depends on the content and team composition.

Why Speed Champions Are So Important

Speed champions do more than help a team move first. They increase the value of every champion around them.

More Turns Means More Value

More turns mean more damage and more healing. It also makes it easier to maintain upkeep of buffs, debuffs, and control on the enemy.

A faster damage dealer may deal more total damage than a harder-hitting champion who takes fewer turns. A fast Apothecary may use their heal twice before a slower support can use it once.

This is why turn frequency often matters more than adding a small amount of Attack, Defence, or Critical Damage.

The Foundation of Team Turn Order

Speed determines who acts first and the order in which abilities are used.

In Arena, a typical speed team opens with a booster, followed by a debuffer and then a damage dealer. If the order is wrong, the nuker may attack before Decrease Defence is applied.

Turn order is also important in Hydra. Increase Speed, Block Buffs, Provoke, Hex, and cleansing effects all need to happen at the right moment.

A fast opener is important, but the Speed of every champion behind them matters too.

Speed Champions Enable Team Strategies

Many advanced teams depend on fast champions.

Arena speed teams use boosters to move before the enemy. Clan Boss teams rely on exact Speed values to align buffs, cleanses, Block Damage, or Unkillable effects.

Hydra teams use Speed buffs and Turn Meter boosts to maintain debuffs and cycle important abilities. Dungeon farming teams may use boosters to push slower damage dealers ahead.

These champions are often hard to replace because changing one can alter the timing of the entire team.

Understanding Speed Champion Stat Priorities

Arbiter Stats example

Why Speed Is the Most Important Stat

Dedicated speed champions usually prioritise Speed above everything else.

Their job is to act before the rest of the team and enable whatever strategy you are trying. Every extra turn also provides more opportunities to boost, heal, revive, cleanse, or debuff.

Broad progression targets can help:

  • Early Game: Around 170 to 220 Speed.
  • Mid Game: Around 220 to 280 Speed.
  • End Game PvE: Often 260 to 330 Speed.

I have started a new Raid account, 2 weeks in I have already got a couple of champions at around 200 speed.

  • For Classic Arena, simple be as fast as possible. For Live Arena, Multiple fast options are often required due to the way Live arena works.
  • For Hydra, you want to be around 220 to 300 Speed. And Demon Lord, exact Speed values matter more than maximum Speed, particularly if running an unkillable team.

These are flexible guidelines. Champion base Speed, Auras, gear, blessings, and team effects can all change the required target.

Accuracy Requirements

Speed champions who place debuffs or reduce Turn Meter also need Accuracy.

Deacon Armstrong needs Accuracy for Decrease Defence and Turn Meter reduction. Lady Kimi needs it for her debuffs and buff manipulation. Lyssandra requires it when reducing enemy Turn Meter.

Their allied Turn Meter boosts do not need Accuracy, but the controlling parts of their kits do.

Perception and Feral are especially useful because they provides both Speed and Accuracy.

HP and Defense Requirements

Speed champions still need enough HP and Defence to survive.

A fragile Arena opener may work in a pure go-first team, but the same build can struggle in Hydra, Doom Tower, or Dungeons. And what happens if you aren’t able to go first in arena?

Supports must stay alive long enough to cycle back to their abilities. Once the required Speed and Accuracy are reached, look for HP%, Defence%, and other defensive stats.

A slightly slower champion who survives the full battle may provide more value than a faster one who dies immediately.

When Resistance Matters

Resistance is useful when a speed support needs to avoid control or disruption.

In Arena, it can help cleansers and revivers resist Provoke, Freeze, Sleep, Block Active Skills, or Turn Meter reduction.

Resistance can also help Hydra supports. Keeping that annoying Fear buff off you, especially if that champion is responsible for cleansing, reviving, or maintaining essential buffs.

However, building high Speed, Accuracy, Resistance, HP, and Defence at once requires strong gear. Focus first on the stats most important to the champion’s main role.

Best Artifact Sets for Speed Champions

Core Speed Sets

The Speed set is the obvious one. It remains one of the most reliable options throughout progression. It directly increases Speed and is available from Dragon, which is one of the easiest dungeons for players.

The Perception set provides both Speed and Accuracy, making it ideal for champions such as Deacon Armstrong and Lady Kimi. It is crafted in the forge and materials are obtained from faction wars. This set is also a stalwart and used on accounts for long periods of time.

The Divine Speed set is a the same as regular speed set, but it adds a shield at the start of each round. The shield is useful, but as this set is a weekly arena reward, it may be harder to get a decent full set.

Early-game players will often rely on Speed sets, while Perception becomes increasingly valuable as Faction Wars progression improves.

Advanced Speed Sets

The Protection set is useful for supports who place multiple buffs, as protected buffs are harder to remove or steal. This can be absolutely game changing in Hydra.

The Feral set is fantastic for any champion that needs speed and ACC to land debuffs or turn meter reduction. It offers a mix of Speed, ACC, defensive utility with Block debuffs and blocking sheep. If that wasnt enough, it increase ally damage too.

The Merciless set is the “speed set” usually used on damage dealers. But the 3 and 7 set piece bonus provide Speed and cooldown reduction at 4 pieces can be goof for aggressive hybrid champions.

We then have sets that have dominated the arena meta.

The Mercurial set was introduced with Grim Forest and became an instant staple. Offering speed at 3, 5 and 8 pieces respectively. Total Guard buff is a cherry on top.

The Stone Skin set, whilst not offering any speed bonuses, has been mainly used in Arena to help important boosters, cleansers, or revivers survive the opening attack.

Why Stats Matter More Than Sets

Lets not forget the age old saying, Stats over Sets. Strong stats are usually more important than completing a perfect set.

A broken-set build with several double or triple Speed rolls may outperform three complete Speed sets with poor substats (see my Prince Kymar with a Resilience weapon).

A full set with low Speed, weak Accuracy, and poor survivability may be worse than mixed pieces that hit every required stat.

Build the stats first. Complete sets only when the available pieces allow it.

How to Build Different Types of Speed Champions

Armanz accuracy example

Different speed champions need different builds. An Arena opener may not be built in the same way as a Hydra support or Clan Boss champion.

Arena Speed Boosters

Arena boosters such as Arbiter, Seeker, or even Apothecary early game are usually built with maximum Speed in mind.

Use Speed boots, prioritise Speed substats, apply glyphs, and take advantage of Speed Auras.

Arbiter is especially strong because she combines a powerful Arena Speed Aura with a Turn Meter boost and Increase Attack. Seeker lacks the Speed aura, but still gives a strongr Turn Meter push and increase attack, while Apothecary brings the boost and Increase Speed buff.

The rest of the team must still be fast enough to follow without allowing the enemy to cut in.

Turn Meter Controllers

Turn Meter controllers such as Deacon Armstrong, Eostrid Dreamsong and Lady Kimi need a more balanced build.

Speed allows them to act early, but they want Accuracy to allow them to land debuffs and Turn meter push back.

These champions are valuable in Arena, but offer flexibility in Doom Tower, Dungeons, and wave content.

Perception is a strong option, but the main goal is reaching the right balance of Speed, Accuracy, and durability.

Hydra Speed Supports

Hydra supports need Speed, Accuracy, and survivability.

Nekmo Thaar is one of the strongest examples. He provides Increase Speed, Turn Meter filling, Decrease Speed, Decrease Attack, and Leech. The latter of the two cant be understated, with Warmaster and Giant Slayer masteries that Leech can come in clutch.

Lady Mikage in her alternate form gives use Turn meter reduction. But she also offers ally attacks, Stun, buff manipulation, and strong team utility. Building her quickly allows her to cycle these abilities more often.

Hydra battles are long and tough, so maximum Speed alone is not enough. HP, Defence, Accuracy, and sometimes Resistance are equally important.

Demon Lord Speed Champions

Demon Lord champions are often built around exact Speed values, rather than going as fast as possible.

In a speed-tuned team, each champion must act at the correct point in the Demon Lord’s rotation. This keeps Block Damage, Unkillable, cleansing, and defensive buffs aligned.

Seeker and Deacon Armstrong are commonly used because their Turn Meter boosts support advanced speed tunes.

Extra Turns, Increase Speed buffs, masteries, or cooldown reduction can break the tune, so follow the exact requirements of the team.

Common Speed Champion Mistakes

Prioritizing Other Stats Over Speed

Many players speed champions are to slow because they focus on HP, Accuracy, or damage first. I bet if you went back and focused on only Speed, you would be able to squeeze a little bit more.

An Arbiter with high survivability but low Speed may never take the first turn. A Deacon with huge Accuracy but poor Speed may move after the enemy has already attacked.

Dedicated boosters rarely need damage stats. Their first job is to take a turn and set up the team.

It is often better to build one genuinely fast opener than spread your best Speed gear across several average champions.

Ignoring Turn Order

Champion order can be just as important as total Speed.

In Arena, the booster should act first, followed by the debuffer and then the damage dealer. If the nuker moves too early, the setup is wasted.

Large Speed gaps can also allow enemies to cut between your champions.

In Clan Boss, one champion moving at the wrong moment can cause buffs, cleanses, or Unkillable effects to fall out of sync.

Always test the full team rather than judging each champion alone.

Building Too Fragile

Maximum Speed is not always the best build.

A pure Arena opener may sacrifice survivability, but Hydra, Dungeon, and Doom Tower supports need to survive long fights.

Fragile revivers and cleansers can become major liabilities if they die before using their abilities.

Build enough Speed to perform the role, then add as much durability as the content requires.

Tips for Maximizing Speed Champion Performance

Understand Your Team’s Turn Order

Consider what should happen after the speed boost.

Does a debuffer need to move next? Should a control champion act before the enemy? Does Increase Attack need to be active before the nuker attacks?

In Hydra, think about when Block Buffs, Provoke, Hex, and Decrease Speed should be placed. In Clan Boss, every ability must align with the boss rotation.

Use team setup options where available and test the order carefully.

Focus on Consistency

Reliable builds usually outperform risky ones.

A slightly slower controller with enough Accuracy may be more useful than a faster build that misses debuffs.

A Hydra support who survives the full battle provides more value than one who starts quickly and dies early.

Avoid random Extra Turns in strict speed tunes, and do not sacrifice essential survivability for a small Speed increase.

Build for the Content You Play Most

Different areas of RAID require different builds.

Arena boosters should prioritise maximum Speed. Hydra supports need Speed, Accuracy, survivability, and sometimes Resistance.

Clan Boss champions must meet exact Speed values. Dungeon supports need enough Speed to maintain control while surviving the run.

Trying to make one champion perfect for every area can leave them poorly optimised everywhere. Build around the content where they provide the most value.
