What Boss damage champions do

Doom-Tower-Bosses

Single Target Damage Dealers

These are champions built to deliver high damage to single-target bosses and enemies, rather than focusing on AoE attacks. While some champions are capable of both single target and AoE damage, this guide focuses on what makes single target champion abilities so effective.

Why Boss Damage Matters

Strong damage dealers are essential for both burst damage and sustained damage over time, helping you take down tough enemies and maximise your output against bosses. They become especially valuable in longer fights like Chimera, Demon Lord, and Hydra, while also proving highly effective against bosses in Doom Tower, Cursed City, and other endgame areas, as well as contributing to wave-based content like Faction Wars and even PvP.

What makes a good boss damage champion

High Single Target Damage

Focusing damage on a single target not only helps bypass passives that reduce damage from AoE attacks, but also increases the effectiveness of mechanics like Hex, boosting the splash damage to 10%. It also allows you to prioritise key enemies, which is especially important as most boss encounters revolve around a single target. Once you begin layering in buffs, relics, blessings, masteries, and debuffs, the damage potential quickly scales, enabling you to take down targets far more efficiently.

Damage Scaling Abilities

Champions can scale their damage from a variety of stats, including Attack, Defence, HP, or even Enemy MAX HP. Building these stats correctly based on the champion is key, with buffs like Increase ATK or Increase DEF further amplifying their damage potential. Some champions also gain additional scaling when attacking targets under buffs or debuffs, making proper setup even more impactful.

Some champions, such as Ninja, can ramp up their damage over time. In his case, his passive can increase his damage significantly, scaling up to 100% more ATK and 25% C.DMG against bosses. This type of scaling is what sets dedicated boss damage dealers apart, especially in longer fights. When combined with Relics and Blessings like Crushing Rend, Nature’s Wrath, Heavencast, and Irethi Coronet, their damage potential can reach even greater heights.

Best boss damage champions for different content

Demon Lord & Chimera Clan Boss

Due to the nature of these fights, success is measured by how much damage you can deal before reaching the turn limit or your team is defeated, rather than how quickly you can finish the encounter. With key reward thresholds tied to higher damage, maximising your output is essential – and this is where your primary damage dealers play a crucial role.

When paired with Ally Attack champions for added burst, alongside the right combination of buffs and debuffs, their damage can scale even further. Adding in Relics and Blessings allows you to fully layer your setup, creating a strong foundation that maximises efficiency when supported by the rest of your team. Some champions can also enhance their own damage through their kit, making them less reliant on external buffs.

Dungeon Bosses

Fast dungeon runs are something all players should aim for when farming gear, especially during Fusion events where repeated clears are essential. Having a strong single target boss damage dealer can significantly speed up your runs once your team has cleared the waves. This is even more important for bosses like the Shogun and Sand Devil, where longer fights allow their mechanics to become increasingly difficult to manage.

Hydra Boss

As a multi-target encounter, bringing AoE damage dealers like Thor is extremely valuable, but strong single-target damage dealers also play a key role. They can help free devoured allies, focus down priority heads, and scale exceptionally well against decapitated heads. Additionally, single target attacks have a great synergy with the Hex debuff, increasing the splash damage to 10% instead of the 2% from AoE hits.

Best Boss damage champions in raid

Here we’ve highlighted some of the top Boss Damage champions in Raid: Shadow Legends, showcasing the different strengths they bring. While this list isn’t exhaustive, it should give you an understanding of what makes these champions so effective. For more options, be sure to check out our Champion Tier List.

Whisper

Whisper Portrait v2

Whisper stands out as one of the most powerful boss slayers in the game. She brings strong multipliers across her entire kit, with the ability to chain extra turns and snowball her damage through cycled attacks. She can also apply Increase ATK and Increase C.Rate to herself, while her A2 allows her to ignore all defence, and the passive further increases damage dealt to bosses by 20%. Having Decrease DEF and Weaken active is essential to unlocking Whisper’s full potential.

Xenomorph

Xenomorph excels not only at clearing waves through the Infest debuff, but also as a powerful boss slayer, particularly against bosses like Dragon and any encounters not immune to Poison. He can consistently apply Poisons through his A1 and passive, then scale his damage through his A3, which deals 15% more damage for each Poison on the target. This combination of debuff application, raw damage, and strong scaling makes him a highly effective option.

Titus

Titus Blackplume Portrait

Titus offers a unique approach to damage, capable of delivering incredible numbers under the right conditions. His A2 scales based on the difference between his MAX HP and the value of his Shield, allowing for massive damage potential when set up correctly. While he is reliant on support from allies like Wixwell, buff extenders, and longer fights like Clan Bosses to fully ramp up, the scaling he can achieve in these scenarios is exceptional.

Harima

While Harima does bring an AoE attack with Provoke, she also excels as a scaling single-target nuker. Her A2 is a triple hit attack that simultaneously decreases the target’s DEF by 5% per hit, up to 30%, while increasing her own DEF by 5% per hit, stacking up to 100%. This combination of self scaling and stat manipulation allows her damage to ramp up significantly as the fight progresses, while her passive further strengthens her by reducing the effectiveness of enemy ignore DEF mechanics.

Thor

Thor Faehammer Portrait

Although Thor isn’t a traditional single target damage dealer, he’s worth highlighting due to how his A2 functions. Instead of hitting all enemies at once, it attacks each target in a random order, which helps maximise Hex splash damage and also counters passives that reduce the effectiveness of AoE attacks. This attack also scales with each subsequent hit, ramping up to 100% increased damage.

Combined with a powerful A1 that can repeat attacks, along with self-buffs, debuffs, and strong AoE damage from his A3 and passive, Thor becomes an extremely effective option for boss encounters. Champions like Kro’khad can also function in a similar way, as his A1 delivers single-target hits rather than true AoE damage.

Gnut

Gnut stands alongside champions like Marius as one of the top Enemy MAX HP damage dealers for bosses. His triple-hit attack allows him to scale this damage more effectively compared to single hit options like Coldheart, giving him greater consistency and output. While traditional damage dealers can now outscale due to the 10% or 5% damage caps on bosses, Enemy MAX HP remains one of the best ways to speed run dungeons and other bosses.

Ninja

Ninja is undoubtedly one of the best boss slayers in the game. When targeting a boss, his A3 becomes a single-target attack that ignores 50% DEF, while his HP Burn placements and activations can be fully focused if no additional enemies are present. On top of this, his passive allows him to scale his ATK up to 100% and 25% C.DMG. This combination of scaling damage, HP Burn activations, and synergy with champions like Lady Mikage makes him powerful option for bosses.

Coldheart

Coldheart-Portrait

Although the introduction of 10% or 5% caps on Enemy MAX HP damage has reduced the impact of single-hit champions like Coldheart compared to multi-hit options like Gnut, she remains a great choice as you progress through Dungeons and Doom Tower. She brings the ability to fully deplete Turn Meter, deal strong Enemy MAX HP damage, and apply Heal Reduction, making her especially valuable in encounters like the Fire Knight & Dark Fae.

Shamael

Shamael brings an extremely hard-hitting A2 that ignores 25% DEF, increasing by a further 25% for each buff on him. This makes him easy to scale through both offensive and defensive buffs from allies, allowing him to deliver massive damage. He is most commonly used in Hydra due to his passive, which counters True Fear from Torment, but his value extends beyond this. With strong damage output and control with True Fear mechanics, he remains a strong option for a wide range of boss fights and wave content.

Tholin

Tholin Foulbeard Portrait

Through Tholin’s A2, when used against bosses, his Ignore DEF increases from 25% to 50%. At the same time, each hit decreases the enemy’s ATK by 5% (stacking up to 25%) while increasing his own ATK by 5% (up to 50%). This scaling allows his damage to ramp up in longer fights. Alongside this, he brings strong AoE damage (A3) and an AoE Weaken on his A1, making him a great hybrid option who can handle both waves and boss encounters effectively.

How to build boss damage champions

Attack & Critical Stats

Firstly, you want to ensure you’re building your boss damage dealer around the stats they scale from, whether that’s Attack, Defence, or HP. Prioritising these key stats will maximise their damage output, alongside reaching 100% Crit Rate (unless their kit guarantees critical hits) and stacking Critical Damage to push that damage even further.

Once these foundations are in place, combining them with the right gear sets, along with Relics, Masteries, full skill upgrades, and Blessings, will allow your damage dealers to truly reach their full potential.

Accuracy or Debuff-Based Damage

It’s also important to consider the type of champion you’re using. Many damage dealers, such as hybrid champions like Kro’khad, combine strong damage with debuff placement. Unless a skill specifically states it cannot be resisted, balancing Accuracy alongside your damage stats and Speed is essential.

Some champions also scale based on the number of buffs or debuffs present on a target. When using these champions, ensuring your team can consistently apply and maintain a high number of debuffs will help you fully maximise their damage potential.

Recommended Artifact Sets

The best gear sets for boss damage dealers are those that allow you to ignore DEF, such as Savage, Lethal, and Merciless. Merciless stands out as the top choice for PvE, offering the highest Ignore DEF potential alongside strong offensive stats, cooldown reduction, and even a chance for Extra Turns with the 9-piece bonus. If using Merciless, we recommend aiming for at least a 6-piece setup.

For earlier progression, Savage and Lethal are much more accessible, both requiring only a 4-piece set. Savage can be farmed from Fire Knight, while Lethal is crafted from Dark Fae materials. These can also be paired with other sets like Perception or Feral to help meet Accuracy and Speed requirements, especially for hybrid champions.

Tips for maximizing boss damage

Use Debuffs to Increase Damage

Ensuring debuffs like Weaken and Decrease DEF are applied before your damage dealers take their turn is crucial for maximising damage. This allows your team to fully benefit from the increased damage these debuffs provide, so your primary debuffers should always be faster than your main damage dealers. You can also utilise debuff spread and debuff extenders to maintain uptime, ensuring key debuffs don’t fall off during crucial moments in the fight.

For boss damage dealers like Kro’khad, who also apply debuffs within their own kit, you can further enhance their output by utilising blessings like Nature’s Wrath and relics such as Irethi Coronet, allowing their damage to scale even higher from the debuffs they place.

Protect Your Damage Dealer

Many damage dealers, particularly those who scale from Attack, tend to be far less durable than DEF or HP-based champions. It’s important to keep your primary damage dealers protected with buffs like Strengthen, Shields, and Ally Protection, while also bringing revivers to recover from difficult moments. Pairing this with offensive buffs will further enhance their damage output while keeping them alive longer.
