What Is the Nether Spider?

The Nether Spider is a boss encountered in two Doom Tower rotations, appearing in both Spirit and Magic Affinity forms, as well as throughout stages of the Cursed City. Agreth and her Spiderlings constantly pressure your team with irresistible, unblockable Poisons that can quickly be detonated if not cleansed in time. The Spiderlings also spawn with Counterattack, causing every retaliation to heal Agreth unless they’re affected by Heal Reduction.

Building a team for the Nether Spider requires a balanced approach. Reliable cleansers are essential to remove the constant Poison debuffs, while healers and revivers help your team survive the sustained damage throughout the fight. To defeat the encounter efficiently, you’ll also want ways to deal with the Spiderlings through effects such as HP Burn, Heal Reduction, crowd control where possible, or enough damage to gradually wear Agreth down while keeping the fight under control.

Understanding the Nether Spider’s Mechanics

Brood Feast

At the start of the boss phase, Agreth summons four Spiderlings before placing Counterattack on each of them, before teaming up with all surviving Spiderlings to attack your entire team. This opening sequence cannot be outsped or prevented, often leaving your team covered in Poison debuffs before you’ve even taken a turn.

Instead, your strategy should focus on managing the aftermath with a fast cleanser, while also controlling the Spiderlings to prevent them from repeatedly retaliating and healing Agreth. If you’re farming on Auto, AI Presets are highly recommended to ensure your cleanser uses their cleanse at the right time, greatly improving the consistency of your runs.

Envenomed Strands

This attacks all enemies and places irresistible, unblockable 5% Poison debuffs. The attack is then repeated once for each Spiderling that doesn’t have an active buff, making it tempting to remove their starting Counterattack buff but often creating an even bigger problem. Instead of stripping the buff, it’s usually far more effective to keep the Spiderlings under control through effects like Stun & Freeze, or simply manage their Counterattacks, as removing their buffs can cause Agreth to flood your team with multiple waves of Poisons.

Passive Mechanics

Elder Lurker punishes Turn Meter reduction by immediately counterattacking whenever Agreth loses Turn Meter. The damage dealt is equal to the amount of Turn Meter removed and ignores 100% of DEF, making full Turn Meter control strategies extremely risky. Champions capable of repeatedly reducing Turn Meter can quickly end up defeating themselves through these retaliations.

Tide of Toxins is what makes frequent cleanses so important throughout the fight. At the start of every Agreth turn, all Poison debuffs on your team are instantly activated, meaning the more Poisons you allow to stack, the more your team will suffer. While you can resist the debuff duration increase and Poison Sensitivity applied when attacking under Poison, these mechanics alone aren’t impactful enough to justify building Resistance specifically for this encounter.

Agreth is also immune to virtually every form of crowd control, preventing strategies built around locking down the boss. However, the Spiderlings are still vulnerable to these effects, making them excellent targets for Stun, Freeze, or other forms of control to reduce the pressure they place on your team. Finally, Enemy MAX HP damage remains effective against Agreth, although it is capped at 10% of her MAX HP per hit.

Building Out Your Team

Cleanser

Cleanser Champions are the most important role for the Nether Spider, allowing you to remove the constant stream of Poison debuffs before they overwhelm your team or are instantly activated by Tide of Toxins. Without reliable cleanses, the unavoidable Poison damage will quickly wear your team down, making it difficult for healers to keep up. Champions capable of cleansing on short cooldowns, or multiple times throughout the fight, provide the greatest consistency and are often the foundation of successful Nether Spider teams.

If your cleanser is vulnerable to the opening barrage of attacks and Poisons, effects such as Stoneskin can provide valuable protection until they get their first turn. This helps ensure squishier Champions survive long enough to use their cleanse, preventing your team from being overwhelmed before your strategy has a chance to begin.

Reviver

Reviver Champions provide an important safety net for longer Nether Spider battles, allowing you to recover if an ally falls to the constant Poison damage. Since even well built teams can lose a Champion during difficult runs, having access to a revive can often be the difference between a successful clear and a failed attempt.

Champions such as Pythion and Raglin are particularly valuable because they combine powerful revive abilities with cleansing. This allows them to not only bring fallen allies back into the fight, but also remove the Poison debuffs that would otherwise leave your revived Champion vulnerable to being defeated again.

HP Burn

HP Burn is one of the strongest ways to defeat the Nether Spider, as every tick of damage from Agreth and her Spiderlings gradually wears the boss down without requiring you to constantly attack. Champions that can place HP Burn directly through their skills are ideal, allowing you to apply the effect while avoiding unnecessary attacks into the Counterattacking Spiderlings.

Unless the Spiderlings are under crowd control, repeatedly attacking them will trigger constant Counterattacks, while killing them too quickly reduces the number of HP Burn activations you’ll gain throughout the fight. Leaving them alive allows the Burn damage to continue ticking on every turn, significantly increasing your overall damage against Agreth.

Geomancer is widely regarded as the best Champion for this encounter thanks to his single target HP Burn and unique passive, which deflects damage back to Agreth through the AOE attacks you recieve. Pairing him with Heal Reduction prevents the Spiderlings from healing the boss, allowing them to continue attacking your team and repeatedly triggering his passive, rapidly wearing Agreth down. Other HP Burn Champions are still highly effective, but they rely more heavily on Agreth and the Spiderlings taking turns to maximise their Burn damage.

Control

If you’re not relying on the Geomancer strategy, where encouraging more attacks speeds up the run, crowd controlling the Spiderlings becomes one of the best ways to manage the encounter. Effects such as Stun & Freeze greatly reduce the number of attacks your team has to endure, limiting the amount of Poison debuffs applied throughout the fight.

Crowd controlling the Spiderlings also prevents them from counterattacking, stopping them from repeatedly healing Agreth whenever they’re attacked. This is especially valuable when using HP Burn Champions that need to hit enemies to apply the debuff, allowing them to safely spread HP Burn without triggering a wave of retaliations.

Flex Spot / Damage Strategy

Your final team slot is flexible and should fill whatever your composition is missing. This could be a dedicated healer, an additional cleanser, or a Champion with powerful passive utility such as Doompriest for cleanses or Vogoth to improve your team’s survivability. Block Damage Champions can also be valuable, allowing you to time their abilities against turns where your team is heavily stacked with Poisons.

Another strategy is to eliminate all of the Spiderlings before focusing your damage on Agreth during the short window before they respawn. This removes the threat of Counterattacks and creates an opportunity to deal burst damage without triggering additional Poison pressure.

Champions such as Ninja excel in this strategy by combining strong direct damage with HP Burn activations to rapidly wear Agreth down while the Spiderlings are absent. However, it requires careful timing of your cleanses, strong enough gear to repeatedly clear the Spiderlings, and is generally less efficient than the Geomancer strategy for consistent farming.

Nether Spider Team Example

Here are five Champions that provide core roles for a consistent Nether Spider team, each bringing valuable effects to counter the boss’s mechanics. Rather than focusing solely on these specific Champions, use the roles they fulfil as a guide when building your own team, adapting your strategy around the Champions available on your account.

Geomancer

Geomancer-Portrait

Geomancer is the cornerstone of one of the fastest Nether Spider strategies thanks to his HP Burn and Stoneguard passive. His passive reduces the damage your entire team takes by 15%, deflecting that damage onto enemies under his HP Burn. More importantly, whenever Geomancer himself is attacked, he instead deflects 30% of the damage received, with each deflected hit having a 30% chance to deal an additional 3% of the target’s MAX HP as bonus damage.

Since both Agreth and her Spiderlings frequently attack the entire team, Geomancer is constantly being hit, giving his passive many opportunities to trigger throughout the fight. When paired with a Heal Reduction Champion to stop the Spiderlings healing Agreth, you can encourage them to keep attacking, allowing Geomancer to repeatedly reflect damage and rapidly wear the boss down.

Ghrukkus

Your Heal Reduction Champion should ideally match the current affinity of the Nether Spider. Ghrukkus is a great option, placing AoE Heal Reduction while dealing low enough damage to keep the Spiderlings alive, allowing them to repeatedly trigger Geomancer’s passive. If you’re not using this strategy, a single target Heal Reduction Champion works just as well.

He also brings extra utility through Decrease SPD, Decrease ATK, and Leech, making him a strong all round option for the encounter.

Pythion

Pythion provides everything you could want for the Nether Spider, combining a full team revive with a complete cleanse and a heal that scales by 5% of each ally’s MAX HP for every debuff removed. With your team frequently covered in Poisons, this heal quickly becomes substantial, helping sustain your team after Agreth’s attacks.

His passive further improves your survivability by reducing all incoming damage by 5% for each buff on your allies, up to a maximum of 25%, making it even easier to withstand the constant damage throughout the encounter.

Vogoth

Vogoth is a great choice for both controlling the waves leading up to the Nether Spider and the boss encounter itself. His passive heals all allies for 50% of the damage he receives, or 25% against boss attacks, providing a constant source of healing throughout the fight. His A1 also increases the duration of debuffs, making it easier to keep effects such as HP Burn active. This combination of passive healing and debuff extension helps offset the sustained damage from Agreth and her Spiderlings.

Marichka

While not a realistic option for most players due to being a Void Legendary, Marichka is one of the best Champions for the Nether Spider. Her passive places Block Damage on allies whenever they’re hit by Bombs, Poisons, or HP Burn, making it incredibly effective at countering the constant Poison damage throughout the fight.

She also brings a full cleanse, healing, Shields, and Strengthen, providing everything your team needs to survive the encounter and making her an outstanding all round option if you have her.

Tips for taking on the Nether Spider

The most important role in any Nether Spider team is a reliable cleanser. Agreth quickly covers your team in Poisons, and without frequent cleanses & strong healing, the damage quickly becomes overwhelming. Revivers also provide a valuable safety net if things go wrong, while Stoneskin on your cleanser or other vulnerable Champions can help them survive the opening attacks before they’re able to take their first turn.

HP Burn is one of the most effective ways to defeat the Nether Spider, especially when paired with Geomancer. Rather than killing the Spiderlings, keeping them alive allows them to repeatedly attack your team, triggering Geomancer’s passive and reflecting damage back at Agreth. If using this strategy, bring Heal Reduction to stop the Spiderlings healing the boss, and avoid Champions that deal excessive AoE damage to the Spiderlings.

If you’re not using Geomancer, crowd control becomes much more valuable. Stun, Freeze, or Sleep can limit the Spiderlings’ attacks, reducing both incoming damage and the number of Counterattacks your team has to deal with. This creates a much safer run for attack based HP Burn Champions or traditional damage dealers to wear the boss down.

Finally, make sure your team is suited to the boss’s current affinity. Matching key debuffers such as your Heal Reduction or HP Burn Champion to the affinity helps improve consistency, while bringing enough Accuracy ensures your important debuffs land when you need them most. A balanced team with cleansing, healing, sustained damage, and the right utility will clear the Nether Spider far more reliably than relying on raw damage alone.
