Understanding Phantom Shogun’s Mechanics in Raid: Shadow Legends
In this guide, we explore how the Phantom Shogun works in Raid: Shadow Legends. Learn the key mechanics behind this unique boss encounter, the best type of Champions and strategies to counter them, what to watch out for during the fight, and how to build teams capable of farming one of the game’s most challenging dungeons.
What Is Phantom Shogun’s Grove?
The Phantom Shogun’s Grove is an end-game dungeon in Raid: Shadow Legends that rewards Accessory Extract, used to Ascend Accessories and unlock additional bonus stats for your Champions. At Stage 25, you’ll also earn Chaos Powder, a resource used to reroll the Ascension bonuses on your Accessories.
The Phantom Shogun is built around the Enfeeble debuff and the unique Shade counter mechanic, punishing Weak Hits while gradually becoming harder to manage as the fight progresses. Successfully farming this dungeon requires careful management of Enfeeble through cleanses, Taunt, or a dedicated Enfeeble tank, alongside well built Awakened Champions, strong team synergy, and precise speed tuning.
Understanding Phantom Shogun’s Mechanics
Shade Counter
At the start of the battle, Akumori activates the Shade counter, which begins at 0 and increases whenever certain conditions are met. Weak hits against the boss, critical hits from Akumori, and Enfeeble debuffs being removed or expiring will all raise the counter, with the amount gained increasing on later stages.
As the Shade counter rises, Akumori becomes increasingly dangerous. Each stack boosts his C.RATE and C.DMG, while reaching key thresholds grants additional protection: at 20 stacks he becomes immune to Poison damage, at 30 stacks he also ignores HP Burn and Smite damage, and at 40 stacks he becomes immune to MAX HP based damage.
If the Shade counter reaches 50, Akumori’s attacks will ignore 100% of the target’s DEF. He will also immediately attack all remaining enemies whenever he kills a Champion, making it important to control how quickly the Shade counter builds throughout the fight.
Akumori’s A4 prioritises enemies under the Enfeeble debuff. As the Shade counter increases, the attack gradually ignores more defensive buffs, bypassing Block Damage at 10 stacks, Unkillable at 20, Ally Protection at 30, and Shields at 40. Allowing the Shade counter to build too high can quickly overwhelm even the most defensive teams, making effective Shade counter management one of the key mechanics.
Enfeeble Interaction
Akumori’s active skills are designed to repeatedly apply and exploit Enfeeble, encouraging Weak Hits that rapidly increase the Shade counter. The encounter begins with Forest of Spears, where the boss targets the enemy with the highest C.DMG, prioritising those not protected by Stoneskin. Before attacking, he places an irresistible Block Passive Skills debuff on all enemies, then applies an irresistible Enfeeble debuff to his target, making your choice of Enfeeble tank one of the most important parts of building a team.
From there, Akumori uses Scourge Sword to prioritise the Enfeeble target, removing buffs from the rest of your team before spreading Enfeeble to every ally and placing Decrease DEF on those affected. This is where timely cleanses or a Taunt Champion become invaluable, either removing Enfeeble or redirecting the attack away from your designated target altogether.
Failing to control Enfeeble will quickly cause the Shade counter to spiral out of control through repeated Weak Hits. As the Shade counter increases, Akumori becomes significantly more dangerous.
Passive & Awakening Mechanics
The Phantom Shogun is immune to every form of crowd control and many disruptive effects, including Enfeeble, Turn Meter reduction, and cooldown manipulation, so defeating him revolves around understanding his mechanics rather than trying to disable him. Like most bosses, damage based on the enemy’s MAX HP is also capped at 10%, but remain powerful.
One of the most important mechanics is Purge the Shadow, which rewards bringing Awakened Champions. Every time an Awakened Champion attacks Akumori, they reduce the Shade counter based on their Awakening Level, helping keep it under control if it raises. Higher Awakening Levels remove more stacks, making them significantly more valuable for consistent and reliable clears.
Finally, Awakened Weakness increases the damage your Awakened Champions deal while reducing the damage they take from Akumori. As a result, highly Awakened Champions not only help control the Shade counter more effectively, but also survive longer and defeat the boss much faster.
Building Out Your Team
Enfeeble / Taunt Tank
Your Enfeeble tank is one of the most important parts of building a Phantom Shogun team, as it determines who the boss will prioritise with his protected Enfeeble debuff and where it will spread from. A common strategy is to make a highly Awakened Champion your highest C.DMG Champion, paired with a cleanser who immediately removes Enfeeble after it spreads to prevent the rest of your team from triggering Weak Hits.
Another effective approach is pairing your highest C.DMG Champion with a Taunt Champion. When Akumori attempts to spread Enfeeble, Taunt redirects the attack, preventing the debuff from spreading from the initial target. Some teams also rely on a dedicated Taunt Champion to consistently redirect this attack, still following up with a cleanse to remove any remaining debuffs and keep the encounter under control.
Damage Dealer
Here, you want Champions capable of dealing multi hit enemy MAX HP damage, ignoring as much DEF as possible, or activating effects such as HP Burn, with Champions like Ninja also bringing excellent raw damage. Ideally, this Champion should have a high Awakening Level, not be your highest C.DMG Champion to avoid becoming the Enfeeble target, and be neutral or strong affinity against the stage to minimise the chance of Weak Hits.
Speed Booster
If Stage 25 is your goal to unlock Chaos Powder drops, you’ll need to deal with the Phantom Shogun’s extremely high base Speed of 350. The opening turns are critical for setting up your buffs and debuffs, enabling Taunt if required, and dealing damage before the boss begins cycling through his mechanics. Speed Auras and Turn Meter boosters can help your team take the first actions, while our Stages Tool can be used to check the Speed requirements for earlier stages and build your team accordingly.
Cleansers
Whenever Akumori spreads Enfeeble, you need to remove both it and the accompanying Decrease DEF as quickly as possible. Using AI presets and proper Speed tuning helps ensure your cleanser acts immediately after the debuff spread, allowing your team to continue attacking without triggering Weak Hits that raise the Shade counter. Avoid relying on passive cleansers such as Doompriest, as Block Passive Skills will disable their passive and leave your team vulnerable.
Flex Spot
The final team slot is flexible and can be tailored to your strategy. This could be another cleanser or Turn Meter booster to help your team cycle faster, a damage enabler such as an Ally Attack Champion, a healer to recover from hits, or simply an additional damage dealer if your goal is to defeat the boss before his mechanics become overwhelming. Reset Champions such as Prince Kymar can also be valuable, allowing you to refresh abilities like your cleanse or damage skills, helping you recover from dangerous situations or wear the boss down more quickly.
Phantom Shogun Team Example
Here are five Champions that form the foundation of a fast and consistent Phantom Shogun team, each filling a key role required to handle the dungeon’s mechanics. Rather than focusing solely on these specific Champions, use the roles they provide as inspiration when building your own team with the Champions available on your account.
Naturally built with high Speed for Arena, Arbiter is an easy choice for helping your team outpace the Phantom Shogun’s high base Speed, allowing you to take your opening turns before the boss begins cycling through his mechanics. She also provides Increase ATK to boost your damage dealers, alongside a full team revive if things go wrong.
Candraphon is naturally built with high C.DMG for other areas of the game, making him an ideal Enfeeble target without sacrificing your primary damage dealer. Since he isn’t relied upon for boss damage and has a non attacking skill, he contributes fewer opportunities to raise the Shade counter through Weak Hits. He’s also harder to kill while Decrease ATK is active, and higher Awakening Levels further improve both his survivability and C.DMG stats.
Riho fills the dual role of your primary debuffer while also providing exceptional healing and cleansing. She helps keep your team alive throughout the fight, and when timed correctly with AI presets and Speed tuning, can remove both Enfeeble and Decrease DEF after they have been spread, allowing your team to continue their rotation safely without raising the Shade counter through Weak Hits.
Whisper is one of the strongest Epic damage dealers for the Phantom Shogun, especially with high Awakening Levels and Empowerment. Keeping Decrease DEF and Weaken active allows her A3 to consistently gain an Extra Turn, setting up her hard hitting A2 for maximum damage. In a well optimised Relentless build, favourable RNG can even allow her to defeat the boss in a single damage phase.
Grand Oak Padraig is an excellent support for the Phantom Shogun, providing a full team cleanse to remove Enfeeble and Decrease DEF after they have been spread. He also brings Increase SPD, Turn Meter fills, and Ally Attack, helping your team stay ahead of the boss while increasing overall damage output.
Tips for taking on the Phantom Shogun
Success against the Phantom Shogun is all about controlling the Shade counter. Avoid Weak Hits wherever possible, remove Enfeeble before your champions take their turns, and ensure your cleanser is properly speed tuned with AI presets so it always acts after the debuff spread. Keeping the Shade counter low prevents the boss from becoming increasingly dangerous and allows your team to remain consistent.
Choose your Enfeeble target carefully. A high C.DMG or Taunt Champion that isn’t your primary damage dealer makes an ideal target, especially if they have strong survivability. High Awakening Levels are also extremely valuable throughout the fight, reducing the Shade counter while increasing both your damage dealt and survivability.
Finally, don’t lack Speed. The Phantom Shogun’s high base Speed means taking the first turns is critical for setting up your strategy before his mechanics begin to snowball. Speed Auras, Increase SPD, Turn Meter boosts, and well optimised builds all help your team stay ahead of the boss, maintain control of the fight, and farm the dungeon consistently.
