Why Champion Roles Matter When Gearing

Knowing Where to Start
RAID: Shadow Legends is an extremely complicated game and learning how to build champions is very intimdating for newer (and even experienced!) players.
What’s the secret? It’s this: understanding the key roles for champions and how those roles are built will get you kickstarted on knowing how to build any champion!
Gear Presets
A recent change in the game now allows players to swap gear between champions at no cost whatsoever, and the Gear Preset system lets you do this incredibly quickly.
Using smart gear presets built around similar champion roles can let you progress much further in content than you were able to before.
Instead of gearing every champion at the same time, you can now have your gear preset for your best ATK-damage dealer gear and swap that to the appropriate champion from each Faction each day–and make much more progress in Faction Wars! This is just one example of what you’ll learn in this guide.
Best Sets and Stats for Damage Dealers

Damage dealers are one of the most common champion archetypes in the game.
They are the most stat-hungry type of build and need very particular sets to work properly.
Primary Stat Priorities
The general stat priority for damage dealer champions is:
100% C.RATE: This is the most important stat, since it gives the biggest damage multiplier. Using a good pair of C.RATE gloves can reach it easily, with C.DMG gloves giving even more damage but requiring C.RATE substats on almost every other piece.
170-250 SPD: Damage dealers will usually be the slowest champion on your team, but it is still essential to reach a baseline SPD stat to ensure you actually take turns before dying. 170 SPD is a good early-game goal; 220 for mid-game; 250 for late-game; and 300+ for end-game.
150-300% C.DMG: This is the next priority damage stat for everyone, though it should be paired with a balance of your main (ATK/HP/DEF, usually) damage stat too. We recommend 150% for early-game; 200% for mid-game; 250% for late-game; and 300% for end-game.
ATK/DEF/HP: You will want to focus only on the stat that is your damage stat (you can see this clearly indicated on your abilities). This should be balanced with C.DMG for most champions.
We recommend using our free HellHades Optimiser Tool to find the best balance of damage stats for your champions based on the gear you actually have.
Hybrid Stat Priorities
Some champions scale off other stats, such as ACC, RES, or SPD: these are usually smaller multipliers, but these stats will have slightly higher value for those champions.
Some champions scale off two standard damage stats, such as both HP and ATK: whichever one is listed first on the skill is more important, but check our individual champion guides for more info.
Most importantly, some champions cross-over into other roles, such as a damage dealer who also places debuffs. These are often extremely difficult builds since damage dealers are the most stat intensive role; the most common hybrid damage dealer is one who places debuffs, where you will also need to build ACC: we recommend 200/300/400 ACC for early/mid/late-game.
Best Damage Dealer Sets
The key to good damage dealer sets is the Ignore DEF stat. The best general sets for damage dealers are:
Savage: This 4-piece set adds 25% Ignore DEF.
Lethal: This 4-piece set adds 25% Ignore DEF on top of 12% C.RATE, making it the best 4-piece option.
Merciless: This is a variable set, giving good damage stats on each level. At 6-piece it gives a massive 35% Ignore DEF which is the major damage breakpoint.
Cruel: This is a 2-piece set which gives 15% ATK and 5% Ignore DEF. This is a good filler set to pair with your main damage set.
Zeal: This is a 2-piece set which gives 20% C.DMG and 3% damage for every 25% HP your champion has (up to 12% bonus damage). This is the best 2-piece set, and can be run in combination with a 4-piece set or even with a full 6-pieces if you have enough Ignore DEF from your skills etc.
Stoneskin: This is a variable set. It is mainly used here for the 4-piece Stoneskin buff, which gives a huge amount of survivability for the first turn of PvP.
Mercurial: This is a variable set. It is mainly used here for the 9-piece Total Guard buffs, which give a huge amount of survivability in PvP, if balanced with incredible damage stats or relics etc.

Best Sets and Stats for Debuffers

Debuffers are champions who place debuffs or negative effects on enemies. They are essential parts of every team because they weaken enemies, dramatically increasing the damage they take, and making them weaker at attacking your own team.
Compared to damage dealers, they are much easier to build.
Primary Stat Priorities
The general stat priority for debuffers is:
200/350/500 ACC: This is the most important stat, since it is essential for landing debuffs and offensive effects. You want to aim for about 25 ACC more than the enemy’s RES stat to have a 95% success rate–use our Raid Stages Tool to find the exact RES any particular enemy has, or aim for 200 ACC early-game; 350 ACC mid-game; and 500 ACC late-game.
200/250/300 SPD: SPD is the next stat you need, to ensure you establish debuffs on enemies as quickly as possible and to maintain high uptime on them as enemies take turns and they start to wear off. We recommend 200 SPD early-game; 250 mid-game; 300 late-game.
After this, it’s pretty common to invest into defensive stats, such as HP or DEF to ensure that your debuffers can stay alive and not absorb resources from your defensive champions that could go towards your vulnerable damage dealers instead.
We recommend using our free HellHades Optimiser Tool to find the best balance of stats for your champions based on the gear you actually have.
Best Debuffer Sets
The key to good debuffers sets is ACC and SPD stats. The best general sets for these types of champions are:
Speed: This 2-piece set adds 12% SPD.
Accuracy: This 2-piece set adds 40 ACC.
Perception: This 2-piece adds 5% SPD and 40 ACC. It’s a direct upgrade over the basic sets.
Feral: This is a variable set which is a direct upgrade over Perception. The key bonus here is the 9-piece bonus which adds 5% damage per debuff placed by this champion.
Reflex: This is a 4-piece set which gives a 40% chance to reduce a random skills cooldown every turn, allowing higher uptime of debuffs.
Stoneskin: This is a variable set. It is mainly used here for the 4-piece or 6-piece Stoneskin buff, which gives a huge amount of survivability for the first turn of PvP.
Mercurial: This is a variable set. It is mainly used here for the 9-piece Total Guard buffs, which give a huge amount of survivability in PvP.

Best Sets and Stats for Buffers

Buffers are champions who place buffs or positive effects on allies. They are essential parts of every team because they protect your team from negative effects and damage, help your team recover, and even boost your damage and turn meter.
These are probably the simplest champions to build–but this doesn’t mean they are easy to build!
Primary Stat Priorities
The general stat priority for buffers is:
200-350 SPD: This is the key stat for buffing champions. It is important to go first to ensure that your other champions have their buffs or positive effects active when they take their turns; these are going to be some of your fastest champions. Taking many turns also ensure you can maintain these with the highest possible uptime. 200 SPD is a good early-game goal; 280 for mid-game; 350 for late-game; and 400+ for end-game.
As you can see, there is only one key stat requirement to this entire role.
It is very common for these champions to invest heavily into defensive stats, such as RES, HP, or DEF as well; or to build specialised sets such as Protection gear or Relentless gear.
Some buffers rely on specific stats such as HP or DEF to increase the power of their Heals or Shields etc: if this is the case, then these become secondary priority stats as well.
It is also common for supports to cover both the buffer and debuffer role, in which case you will need to build ACC like a debuffer.
We recommend using our free HellHades Optimiser Tool to find the best balance of damage stats for your champions based on the gear you actually have.
Best Debuffer Sets
The key to good buffers sets is the SPD stat and cooldown reduction. The best general sets for these types of champions are:
Speed: This 2-piece set adds 12% SPD.
Regeneration: This is a 4-piece set which heals for every turn.
Protection: This is a variable set which adds great stats. The key bonus here is the 9-piece bonus which adds 5% damage per buff placed by this champion.
Reflex: This is a 4-piece set which gives a 40% chance to reduce a random skills cooldown every turn, allowing higher uptime of buffs.
Relentless: This is a 4-piece set which gives a 18% chance of an Extra Turn, allowing higher uptime of buffs.

Best Sets and Stats for Control

Control champions are strictly speaking a subset of debuffers who focus on debuffs and effects which prevent enemies from taking turns.
They are extremely strong in both PvP and wave-based content. Due to the short duration yet high power of control effects, they need specific gear to maximise their potential.
Primary Stat Priorities
The general stat priority for controllers is:
200/350/500 ACC: This is the most important stat, since it is essential for landing debuffs and offensive effects. You want to aim for about 25 ACC more than the enemy’s RES stat to have a 95% success rate–use our Raid Stages Tool to find the exact RES any particular enemy has, or aim for 200 ACC early-game; 350 ACC mid-game; and 500 ACC late-game.
200/300/400 SPD: SPD is the next stat you need, to ensure you establish debuffs on enemies as quickly as possible and to maintain high uptime on them as enemies take turns and they start to wear off. This is usually the main focus when building control champions; you will try squeeze in as much SPD as possible after reaching your ACC requirements. We recommend 200 SPD early-game; 300 mid-game; 400 late-game.
Control champions are usually hyper-focused on just these two stats: build enough ACC for your abilities to work; then cram in as much SPD as possible.
We recommend using our free HellHades Optimiser Tool to find the best balance of stats for your champions based on the gear you actually have.
Best Debuffer Sets
The key to good control sets is ACC and SPD stats.
Supersonic: This is a variable set which brings massive Turn Meter potential. The key bonus here is the 4-piece bonus which adds 2% turn meter for every buff the enemy receives.
