Understanding the Sand Devil’s Mechanics in Raid: Shadow Legends
In this guide, we explore how the Sand Devil works in Raid: Shadow Legends. Learn the key mechanics behind this challenging boss encounter, the best Champion types and strategies for exploiting its Sleep mechanics, how to survive its attacks, debuffs and MAX HP destruction, and how to build teams capable of consistently defeating it across the Dungeon, Proving Grounds & Cursed City.
What Is the Sand Devil?
Al-Naemeh, the Sand Devil, is a unique boss encounter built heavily around the Sleep debuff. While awake, the boss is immune to every debuff, with Sleep being the key effect that opens a window for your team to apply many of the debuffs needed to weaken him. Al-Naemeh also has significant damage reduction, but each debuff currently placed on him reduces this protection by 15%, with 7 debuffs being enough to remove the reduction and expose him to your main damage.
Surviving the encounter can be just as challenging as dealing damage. Feasting Swarm can inflict devastating AoE damage while ignoring DEF and several common defensive effects, making Revive on Death and other revival strategies particularly valuable. Al-Naemeh can also place disruptive debuffs on your team, while repeatedly destroying portions of your Champions’ MAX HP as he attacks.
This destroyed MAX HP feeds into another dangerous part of the encounter, as Al-Naemeh can heal himself based on the total amount of MAX HP he’s destroyed across your team. However, healing your Champions while the boss is under Sleep can restore their destroyed MAX HP, creating another reason to carefully manage your Sleep windows. Balancing Sleep, debuffs, healing, revival, and well timed bursts of damage forms the foundation of most strategies for defeating the Sand Devil.
The main reason to farm the Sand Devil is for its unique resource drops, including Lesser Oil, Greater Oil, Superior Oil, and at Stage 25, Chaos Dust. These resources are used to Ascend your Artifacts and reroll their Ascension Bonuses, allowing you to further improve your gear. The Phantom Shogun serves a similar purpose for Accessories, providing the resources needed to Ascend and improve those pieces instead.
Understanding the Sand Devil’s Skills
Rage of the Sands
Al-Naemeh attacks all enemies before placing Decrease SPD and Decrease ACC for 2 turns. These debuffs can disrupt your team’s rotations and make it harder to reliably place important effects, so cleansing, Block Debuffs, or enough Resistance can help keep your strategy running smoothly.
Dune Tempest
Al-Naemeh removes all debuffs from himself before healing based on the total amount of MAX HP he’s destroyed across your team. He then attacks all enemies, although the damage of this attack is reduced for each debuff he removed beforehand. This creates an interesting trade off where stacking debuffs helps reduce his damage reduction while also weakening Dune Tempest when they’re eventually cleansed.
Feasting Swarm
This is Al-Naemeh’s most dangerous attack, hitting all enemies while ignoring 100% DEF alongside Shield, Block Damage, and Unkillable. After attacking, Al-Naemeh places Sleep on himself for 2 turns, creating your main opportunity to apply debuffs and deal significant damage. Revive, Revive on Death, and specialised survival strategies can be particularly valuable for recovering from this attack.
Rest for the Wicked (P)
While awake, Al-Naemeh is immune to every debuff except Sleep, alongside several forms of skill, HP, and Turn Meter manipulation. Once Sleep is applied, most regular debuffs can be placed, although he’s still immune to control effects.
This passive also provides significant innate damage reduction, scaling from 25% on Stages 1-5, to 50% on Stages 6-15 and 75% on Stages 16-25. Each debuff currently placed on Al-Naemeh reduces this protection by 15%, meaning 7 active debuffs will completely remove the 75% reduction found on the highest stages.
Soul Sustenance (P)
Every time Al-Naemeh attacks, he destroys the MAX HP of all targets by 5%. Reducing his Turn Meter is also heavily punished, destroying the MAX HP of the Champion responsible by the same percentage that his Turn Meter was reduced.
There is a way to recover from this mechanic. Whenever Al-Naemeh is under Sleep and one of your Champions is healed, part of their destroyed MAX HP is restored by the same value as the heal. Timing your healing during Sleep windows can therefore help prevent MAX HP destruction from becoming overwhelming.
Dreamless Sleep (P)
Whenever Sleep is placed on Al-Naemeh, his Slumber counter activates. Unlike regular Sleep, attacking him won’t immediately remove the debuff. Instead, each instance of damage reduces the Slumber counter by 1, with damage caused by debuffs being excluded.
Once the counter reaches 0, Sleep is removed and Al-Naemeh fills his Turn Meter by 50%. If Sleep instead expires or is removed normally, he becomes immune to Sleep for 1 turn. The Slumber counter also becomes shorter as you progress, starting at 16 on Stages 1-5 and eventually dropping to just 8 on Stages 21-25.
Almighty Strength (P)
Damage from skills based on Enemy MAX HP is capped at 10% of Al-Naemeh’s MAX HP when attacking the boss. This limits how much damage these skills can deal with each hit, although they can still provide strong damage when used during your main Sleep and debuff windows.
Building Out Your Team
The number one thing you need to consider is bringing a reliable Sleep Champion for the stage you’re facing. Stage 25, for example, is Force Affinity, so relying on a Magic Champion to apply Sleep through an attack can lead to Weak Hits and inconsistent farming. Aim for Champions with a neutral or positive Affinity matchup, or those capable of placing Sleep without attacking to bypass the risk of Weak Hits entirely. You can also use the Stages Tool to check important requirements such as SPD and ACC for the specific stage you’re facing.
Stage 25 is also where you begin earning Chaos Dust, making it an important milestone for changing the Ascension Bonuses on your Artifacts. Reaching this point can be challenging, but the rewards make progressing towards a consistent farming team worthwhile. There are several ways to build fast Sand Devil teams, although some strategies can be quite niche and Champion dependent. Let’s break down some of the key roles you can use when building your team.
Sleep Champion
Sleep is the key mechanic for opening up the Sand Devil to your debuffs, as Al-Naemeh is otherwise immune to almost everything except Sleep. Ideally, use a Sleep Champion with a neutral or positive Affinity against the boss to reduce the risk of Weak Hits, or use a skill that places Sleep without attacking to bypass this concern entirely.
High Debuff Coverage
Once Al-Naemeh is asleep, bringing Champions capable of applying multiple debuffs can significantly increase your damage potential. His innate damage reduction is lowered by 15% for every debuff currently placed, with 7 debuffs completely removing this protection. Effects such as Decrease DEF and Weaken can then further enhance the damage you deal during these windows.
Revive & Revive on Death
Feasting Swarm can deal insane damage by ignoring 100% DEF alongside Shield, Block Damage, and Unkillable, making revival one of the most effective ways to recover. Champions such as Godseeker Aniri can enable both full team and duo strategies, with Stoneskin helping her survive Feasting Swarm before reviving a fallen damage dealer & debuffer to continue the fight. Revive on Death can provide another effective way to recover immediately after the attack.
Aspect of Siroth
Aspect of Siroth can be particularly valuable on an AoE Reviver, providing another layer of protection to help them withstand Feasting Swarm. Keeping your Reviver alive through this attack can allow the rest of the team to be brought straight back into the fight, making otherwise fatal damage much easier to recover from.
Solo & Duo Champions
Certain Champions can take advantage of the Sand Devil’s mechanics to form specialised solo or duo strategies. Champions such as Blizaar and Embrys have the tools to sustain themselves and gradually wear Al-Naemeh down, especially with a high star Brimstone blessing, while Godseeker Aniri is one of the standout options for duo teams thanks to the combination of revival and support.
Healing & MAX HP Restoration
Every attack from Al-Naemeh destroys your Champions’ MAX HP, which can gradually make the team easier to kill while also contributing towards his Dune Tempest healing. Healing a Champion while Al-Naemeh is under Sleep restores destroyed MAX HP equal to the value of the heal, making well timed healing particularly useful for longer encounters.
Damage Dealers & Skill Resets
Enemy MAX HP Champions such as Gnut and Marius are extremely powerful for dealing large bursts of damage during Al-Naemeh’s vulnerable windows. Pairing them with a skill reset Champion can give you faster access to these powerful attacks, allowing you to push through the boss much quicker. Some strategies can then use a Champion such as Godseeker Aniri to survive Feasting Swarm in Stoneskin, revive the fallen damage dealers with their skills reset, and allow them to return for another burst to finish the fight.
Enemy MAX HP damage is capped at 10% of the boss’s MAX HP per skill hit, making multi hit attacks particularly effective.
Sand Devil Team example
Here is an end game speed team example for farming the Sand Devil, combining several key roles to quickly weaken and take down the boss. This setup relies on specific Champions, builds, and skill timings, so use it as an example rather than a requirement. Be sure to check the Team Optimiser for successful Sand Devil teams using the Champions available on your own account.
In this team, Godseeker Aniri is built at a low 146 SPD in Stoneskin, allowing her to withstand the AoE Feasting Swarm attack. Her key role is protecting and reviving Riho in the lead position through the Guardian Angel passive, before using Rise of Glory to bring Gnut back into the fight. With Gnut’s skills refreshed by the skill reset, he can then unleash another Enemy MAX HP attack to help finish off the boss.
Adelyn is built at 284 SPD, opening with Writ of Sleep to place Sleep, Decrease ATK, and Decrease SPD on the boss. This immediately puts Al-Naemeh to sleep while adding three debuffs to reduce his damage reduction, with Decrease SPD also helping the team maintain the speed tune and outpace the boss. Adelyn is also equipped with Brimstone, providing additional damage through Smite while adding another debuff to further weaken Al-Naemeh’s damage reduction.
Riho is built at 276 SPD with enough ACC to reliably place her debuffs, opening with the A2 to apply five debuffs to the boss, excluding Stun due to Al-Naemeh’s immunity. Following Kymar’s skill reset, Riho then uses the A3 before the team is wiped by Feasting Swarm. This ensures her skills are refreshed before she falls, allowing Godseeker to revive her with the A2 immediately available to reapply the debuffs and set up Gnut for another Enemy MAX HP attack.
Although Kymar can bring Sleep, he’s inconsistent for Stage 25 due to the negative Affinity matchup. His main role in this team is the full-team skill reset, alongside the Turn Meter boost to ensure Gnut gets two cycles of Blessed Bash before the team is wiped by Feasting Swarm. This leaves the boss low enough for Gnut to be revived with his skills refreshed, allowing one final Blessed Bash to finish the fight. (345 speed)
Gnut is built at 258 SPD, despite the boss having 270 SPD. Adelyn’s Decrease SPD reduces the Speed required for the tune, while Kymar’s Turn Meter boost helps Gnut cycle through his turns quickly enough. His main role is to use Blessed Bash three times throughout the run, twice before the team is wiped by Feasting Swarm, then once more after being revived by Godseeker with his skills refreshed to finish off the boss.
Tips for taking on the Sand Devil
- Bring a Reliable Sleep Champion – Sleep is the key mechanic for controlling the Sand Devil, allowing you to apply your important debuffs while Al-Naemeh is asleep. Consider the Affinity of the stage you’re facing, aiming for a neutral or positive matchup, or use a Champion who places Sleep without attacking to avoid the risk of Weak Hits.
- Manage the Slumber Counter – Each instance of direct damage reduces Al-Naemeh’s Slumber counter while he’s asleep, potentially waking him earlier than intended. Depending on your strategy, carefully select which attacks you use during this window so you don’t waste Slumber stacks before your important debuffs and damage skills are ready.
- Stack Debuffs During Sleep – Al-Naemeh’s damage reduction is lowered by 15% for every debuff currently placed on him, with 7 debuffs completely removing this protection. Champions capable of applying several effects at once can quickly open the boss up for your main damage dealers.
- Prioritise Decrease DEF & Weaken – Alongside removing Al-Naemeh’s innate damage reduction, effects such as Decrease DEF and Weaken can further increase the damage you deal. Applying these before your strongest attacks helps maximise each vulnerable window.
- Prepare for Feasting Swarm – This is Al-Naemeh’s most dangerous attack, ignoring 100% DEF alongside Shield, Block Damage, and Unkillable. Revive on Death, dedicated Revivers, and specialised survival options can help your team recover and continue the run.
- Protect Your Reviver – Keeping a Reviver alive through Feasting Swarm can be the difference between a wipe and a successful run. Stoneskin and options such as Aspect of Siroth can provide additional protection, allowing them to survive before bringing the rest of the team back.
- Use Enemy MAX HP Damage – Enemy MAX HP Champions such as Gnut and Marius can quickly tear through Al-Naemeh once his damage reduction has been lowered. Each skill hit is capped at 10% of the boss’s MAX HP, making powerful multi-hit options particularly effective.
- Consider Skill Resets for Speed Teams – Reset Champions can give your strongest damage dealers another immediate use of their key abilities. With the correct speed tune, you can use these attacks multiple times before Feasting Swarm and have them available again when Champions are revived.
- Time Your Healing During Sleep – Al-Naemeh gradually destroys your Champions’ MAX HP with his attacks. Healing allies while the boss is under Sleep can restore destroyed MAX HP equal to the value of the heal, making the timing of your sustain particularly important in longer fights.
- Be Careful With Turn Meter Reduction – Reducing Al-Naemeh’s Turn Meter also destroys the MAX HP of the Champion responsible by the same percentage. Avoid unnecessary Turn Meter manipulation unless it’s specifically accounted for within your strategy.
- Explore Solo & Duo Strategies – Champions such as Blizaar and Embrys can enable specialised solo approaches, while Godseeker Aniri is a standout option for duo and revival-based teams. These strategies can provide reliable alternatives if you’re unable to build one of the faster end game teams.
- Use the Team Optimiser – Sand Devil has many successful team compositions beyond the Champions shown in this guide. Check the Team Optimiser to find proven teams using Champions available on your account, particularly if you’re missing pieces required for specialised speed farms.
- Check the Stages Tool – The Sand Devil’s Affinity and stat requirements change as you progress. Use the Stages Tool to check the boss’s SPD, alongside the ACC and other requirements you’ll need for the specific stage you’re building towards.
