Rengokutsu Boss Guide

Rengokutsu is the final boss you will face in Etheria: Restart’s Grim Pursuit, a content area specifically focused on farming Shells to enhance your Animus Builds.

Rengokutsu rotates his Element, making it hard to avoid facing him with Negative Elemental Advantage, however, he starts as Odd, countering this with Hollow early in the fight can help you gain advantage at the beginning of the encounter.

You can fight Rengokutsu on Nightmare, Hell and Inferno difficulty, with the latter rewarding Shells with 3 Matrix Lines if you are able to defeat him.

Lore: Constructing an unbreakable prison from desire itself, calmly watching as the enemy seals their own fate.

In this guide, we will break down Rengokutsu’s Skills, how to face this encounter, as well as recommending a Progression Team for defeating him.

Possible Rewards

Rengokutsu Skills

Fire Blast

Rengokutsu deals 600% damage to a single enemy; when attacking enemies with a countered role, has a 100% chance to steal 20% Turn Meter.

Ascending Flame

Rengokutsu deals 600% damage to all enemies, ignoring 25% DEF; when attacking enemies with a countered role, ignores 40% DEF and clears their Turn Meter. After casting, changes all allies’ roles in sequence: Reason > Odd > Hollow > Disorder > Constant

Dark Desire

Each time enemies of the same Affinity take a total of 4 turns, Rengokutsu deals 400% damage to those enemies and applies [Evil Fire].
(Each stack raises the effect of DMG Taken Increase by 20%.)

How to beat Rengokutsu

There are several effective strategies for killing Rengokutsu, each built around handling his unique mechanics—particularly his affinity-based passive and escalating damage output. One of the most important fundamentals is building a rainbow team, meaning a group made up of four different affinities. For example Reason, Odd, Constant, and Hollow. Rengokutsu’s passive, [Dark Desire], triggers whenever four actions are taken by characters of the same affinity, dealing massive AoE damage and applying [Evil Fire], a stacking debuff that increases damage taken. Using a rainbow composition ensures this passive rarely or never triggers, which is essential for surviving longer fights.

Another key approach is controlling Rengokutsu’s Turn Meter, which delays his powerful skills. Heroes like Kloss and RC-77 are particularly valuable here, with abilities that reduce Turn Meter and disrupt his turn rotation. The longer you delay her casting [Ascending Flame] and other big-hitting moves, the more time you have to either build up [DoT] pressure or push for a clean burst kill. RC-77 also brings [ATK-] and [DEF-], which are helpful but not mandatory—especially if you’re confident in your survivability and DPS output.

A third method is to use [Taunt] control. Like all bosses in Grim Pursuit, Rengokutsu is immune to all crowd control except Taunt, making Rin a top-tier pick. Equipping her with the Bramble Set allows her to reapply [Taunt] through counterattacks, keeping Rengokutsu locked on her and off your damage dealers. This strategy shifts the pressure off your team, letting you run slower or more defensive units while the boss’s major skills are delayed or neutralized. Paired with a strong healer like Lingluo, Rin can tank through most of the early fight while your team works her down. It’s not the fastest method, but it’s consistent—especially when paired with Turn Meter reduction.

Finally, for those looking for a more passive approach, [DoT] teams using heroes like Obol can be very effective. Instead of relying on burst, these teams chip Rengokutsu down over time while maintaining control and sustain. Whether you’re playing it fast with nukers like Massiah, safe with [Taunt] tanks and healers, or slow and steady with [DoT]s, the key to victory is managing Rengokutsu’s mechanics while avoiding long fights where [Evil Fire] becomes overwhelming.
