Artifact and Accessory Ascension Guide
In this guide we will explain how to ascend artifacts and accessories in Raid: Shadow Legends, where and when to farm the materials needed, the best stats to look for, and which pieces you should ascend first.
Gear ascension is a powerful and relatively new system in Raid that lets you get a lot of extra stats out of your gear and push your champions to their full potential. This is a must-use system for dedicated players of the game, so let’s break down everything you need to know!
WHAT IS GEAR ASCENSION?
Gear Ascension unlocks at player Level 38 and allows players to upgrade their gear with random stat bonuses that are unique to each gear slot using Oil or Extract.
The possible stat bonuses for each slot are listed below:

To ascend a piece of gear it must be at least rank 4 (though you should only ever ascend 6 star gear, or the occasional piece of 5 star gear if it is very good) and upgraded to level 12. You can ascend a piece of gear a number of times equal to its rank: a 5 star piece of gear can be ascended 5 times; a 6 star piece of gear can be ascended 6 times, etc.
HOW POWERFUL IS ARTIFACT ASCENSION?
Getting the right gear ascensions on your champions can be a massive increase to their stats.
Let’s take Duchess Lilitu as an example:
- With HP ascensions for 1,224 HP each on her Weapon, Helmet and Shield she gets an extra 3,672 HP.
- With HP% ascensions for 20% HP each on her Gloves, Chest, and Boots she gets an extra 13,482 HP.
- With HP ascensions for 1,224 on her Ring and Amulet, and 1,836 on her Banner she gets an extra 4,284 HP.
- In total, fully ascended gear can give Duchess Lilitu an extra 21,438 HP, which is a huge increase to her survivability.
For damage dealers, it’s a similar story with damage stats; and debuffers with accuracy stats. And, of course, for winning the speed race in arena or for getting enough speed for boss fights, an extra 12 speed from ascension on your boots can be a game-changer.
HOW TO ASCEND GEAR AND ACCESSORIES
The resource needed to ascend gear is called Oil; and for accessories, Extract. You can earn Oils from the Sand Devil’s Necropolis dungeon and Extract from the Phantom Shogun’s Grove dungeon.
Lesser Oil and Extract are used for levels 1-2 of ascension; Greater Oil and Extract are used for levels 3-4; and Superior Oil and Extract are used for levels 5-6. Higher levels of the Sand Devil and Phantom Shogun dungeons will drop higher levels of these oils, and in steadily increasing quantities.
On top of this, Oil and Extract are often given as rewards in Events and Tournaments, so be on the lookout for these valuable resources.
The required amounts of oil/extract for each ascension are listed below:
WHICH PIECES SHOULD YOU ASCEND FIRST?
There’s a trade-off to be made when it comes to ascending gear and accessories. Gloves, Chests, and Boots give much stronger bonuses than Weapons, Helmets, and Shields but because of the many potential stats available it is also much more difficult to roll the exact stats you want.
We’ll discuss re-rolling ascension in a later section. For now, you should ascend your strongest potential pieces first to see if they get the ascension you want, and you can consider re-rolling them later if needed.
For damage dealers, Gloves are the best since they can give Crit Damage, Crit Rate, or a % of your damage stat. After this, you should look for Speed or Main Stat% on your boots, and then Main Stat% on your chest.
For supports or debuffers, boots are the best since they can give Speed, though defensive % stats are good too. Chest pieces come next for accuracy, resistance, or %defensive stats (whatever fits your champ best), then gloves for %defensive stats.
Weapons, Helmets, and Shields are a luxury to ascend since they only every give flat HP, DEF, or ATK.
For accessories, Amulets are the best for damage dealers since they can give Crit Damage%. Rings only give flat stats and are therefore low priority. Banners give stronger flat stats than Rings or Amulets which makes them higher priority, and they can also give Accuracy or Resistance for debuffer or support builds.
Ascending artifacts gives more stats and covers more pieces than ascending accessories so that should nearly always take priority. In other words, you will be farming a lot more Sand Devil than Phantom Shogun!
RE-ROLLING ASCENSION
Unlike reworking gear with Chaos Ore which can only be done one time, you can re-roll your artifact ascensions an unlimited number of times—albeit at a very high cost.

To re-roll ascensions, you will need to collect Chaos Dust from Sand Devil for your gear and Chaos Powder from Phantom Shogun for your accessories. Unfortunately, these currently only drop from level 25 of these dungeons, meaning you will likely need to reach the end game to be able to reliably farm them. They sometimes appear as rewards for Tournaments and Events as well in limited amounts.
The cost for each reworking attempt is as follows:
- First: 3
- Second: 4
- Third: 5
- Fourth: 6
- Fifth: 7
- Sixth: 8
- Seventh or more: 9
Generally, it is so expensive to rework ascensions multiple times that you should almost never do so unless it is a limited and truly exceptional piece of gear—and even then, only if you are an end-game player. Check out our tips below on gear ascension for advice for every stage of the game!
EARLY GAME TIPS
- Don’t farm Sand Devil or Phantom Shogun at this stage of the game.
- Only ever ascend 6 star gear.
- Don’t re-roll any ascensions until you have better gear.
- Only ascend your very best gear that will be used by your core champions.
- Look for Speed ascensions on Speed or Perception boots with Speed main stats.
MID GAME TIPS
- You can farm some Sand Devil or Shogun at this stage, mostly if it overlaps a matching tournament.
- Mostly ascend 6 star gear or very exceptional 5 star gear.
- Only re-roll truly exceptional gear 1-2 times max.
- Only ascend item of high quality that will be used by your core champions.
- Look for good ascensions on your Gloves/Chest/Boots and C.DMG Amulets/ACC Banners.
END GAME TIPS
- Farming Sand Devil and Shogun becomes one of the most valuable ways to spend energy.
- Mostly ascend 6 star gear or very exceptional 5 star gear.
- Re-roll strong pieces 1-2 times; re-roll exceptional pieces multiple times.
- Limited gear sets (e.g. Merciless, Protection, Feral, etc.) are best.
- Focus on getting your core champions’ gear sets fully ascended.
Can you add a breakdown of the bonuses? For example a 6 star c.dmg amulet gets an extra 20% on the original 40%
