Edward Kenway Lore: Official Story
“Everything is permitted? I like the sound of that. Talking how I like, and acting how I please.”
A fearless pirate and skilled warrior, Edward Kenway boasts an adventurous spirit and unmatched navigational talent. His flair for combat earned him a reputation among the most fearsome and legendary pirates of his time. Despite his seemingly carefree nature, various interactions with the Assassin Brotherhood led Edward to re-evaluate his priorities, giving him a deeper understanding of what it means to be free and shoulder responsibility.
Edward Kenway has had almost as many adventures as he had drinks, and often the two collide in exciting fashion. Never before though has Edward drank so much that he awoke in another world.
Such was his predicament when Master Kenway found himself aboard the Gilded Nymph, a galleon bound for the city of Velyzar with its black flag billowing in the wind. After charming his fellow travelers into believing that he was nothing but a swashbuckling stowaway, they told him of their destination. It was a gladiatorial port city, they said, home to warriors, thieves, peasants, dukes, duchesses, the rich, the poor, and everyone in between. Edward knew that if there was anywhere he was going to find information about how to get home, a bustling port would probably be the place.
When the ship arrived, Edward was struck by the similarity of Velyzar’s people to those of his home. Some lived in poverty, some relished the fighting in the arenas, and some peacocked around as if they owned the place. As soon as his feet hit the dock, Edward watched as one man, Pontiff Augustin, paraded past alongside a congregation begging for his attentions. With an outstretched hand and a glowing flask hanging from his robe, Augustin healed those before him. Rashes were instantly smoothed, those with broken legs leapt for joy, and the blind marveled at the purple and gold robes of their savior. Some would say these acts were miraculous. Edward thought them suspicious.
Master Kenway decided to find out more about this Augustin, watching from street corners as the Pontiff walked through the squalor and the dirtiness of the city. With one hand, he fed and nourished the people with fresh food and words of wisdom, but his grace came at a cost. Those who were healed became Augustin’s pawns, a malleable rabble who blindly preached the word of their saviour, violently turning on those who would not accept his charity. Edward vowed it would not continue.
