Vallaryn the Equalizer Spotlight: Is RAID’s Free Login Champion Worth Building?

Vallaryn the Equalizer is the newest free login champion in RAID: Shadow Legends, and the good news is that he’s much better than many players may expect.

He isn’t designed to be a late-game meta breaker, but for early and mid-game players, Vallaryn offers a really strong mix of damage, healing, debuffs, and survivability. Better still, he is permanently available in-game, and players completing his chase event can also earn up to his five-star soul for free.

So, is he worth building? For newer accounts, absolutely.

What Does Vallaryn Do?

Vallaryn is a damage-focused champion with a surprising amount of utility.

His kit includes:

  • Heal Reduction on his A1
  • AoE Weaken and Leech on his A2
  • A hard-hitting HP swap attack on his A3
  • Self-healing
  • Passive ounterattacks when enemies heal
  • Cooldown reduction when he takes heavy damage

That combination makes him especially useful for progression content, where you often need one champion to cover several jobs at once.

Why Heal Reduction Matters More Than Ever

Heal Reduction used to feel like a niche debuff, but newer content has made it far more valuable.

Vallaryn places the big version of Heal Reduction on his A1, meaning there’s no cooldown. That makes him excellent against bosses that rely heavily on healing.

This is especially useful in:

  • Grim Forest
  • Cursed City
  • Amius the Lunar Archon
  • Mimic chests

Against the Mimic boss, for example, Heal Reduction can be the difference between pushing through the fight or watching the boss heal back to full every turn.

Let’s be honest, few things feel worse than doing loads of damage only to see the boss undo it all instantly.

How Much Damage Does Vallaryn Do?

Vallaryn_the_Equalizer announcement

Vallaryn’s damage is solid, but not outrageous.

His AoE hit is decent, but it won’t compete with top-tier nukers. His A3, however, hits surprisingly hard, especially because it ignores defense and can ignore even more defense when his HP is higher than the target’s.

In testing, his A3 outperformed Edward Kenway’s single-target hit, which is extremely impressive for a free login champion.

The key takeaway is simple:

Vallaryn is not a pure nuker, but he does enough damage (especially with his A3) while bringing excellent utility.

How to Build Vallaryn

Best Gear Sets for Vallaryn

Vallaryn has several build paths depending on your account stage.

Early Game Build

Focus on stats first.

Good sets include:

  • Speed
  • Accuracy
  • Perception
  • Lifesteal
  • Cruel
  • Immortal

Your goal is to make him consistent and survivable.

Prioritize:

  • 100% Crit Rate
  • Enough Accuracy
  • Speed
  • Attack
  • Crit Damage

Mid-Game Build

Once you have better gear, look for damage-focused sets.

Good options include:

  • Savage
  • Lethal
  • Stoneskin
  • Swift Parry

Savage and Lethal are especially strong because their Ignore Defense stacks well with Valerin’s A3.

Endgame PvE Build

For harder PvE content, Merciless is likely his best option.

Merciless gives:

  • Attack
  • Crit Damage
  • Speed
  • Cooldown reduction
  • Ignore Defense
  • Extra turns at higher set levels

This helps keep Vallaryn relevant in places like Faction Wars, Cursed City, and boss content.

Best Blessings for Vallaryn

The best Blessings for Vallaryn are:

  1. Brimstone: This is the best choice if no one else on your team has it. Brimstone adds major boss damage and works especially well for progression.
  2. Nature’s Wrath: If you already have Brimstone covered, Nature’s Wrath is a strong damage option because Vallaryn places several debuffs.
  3. Lightning Cage: This is mostly for PvP. It helps protect buffs and gives him a little more staying power in Arena. For most players, Brimstone or Nature’s Wrath will be the better choice.

Best Relics for Vallaryn

The best Relics for Vallaryn are:

  1. Irethi Coronet (epic): This is the best choice for PvE, giving him up to 30% more damage as he places debuffs.
  2. Gorecrescent (legendary): This is a fairly accessible legendary option that will give him him higher burst damage against waves.
  3. Golden Elixir (epic): This relic has great stats and will double-down on his self-healing capabilities.
  4. Malefic Talon (rare) or Steel-Eyed Cutter (rare): These are both accessible rare stat sticks that will give him a decent damage boost.

Best Masteries

For newer players, Warmaster is the safest mastery choice.

It adds reliable boss damage and pairs beautifully with Leech for healing.

Later on, if you have Vallaryn in Savage, Lethal, or Merciless gear, Helmsmasher becomes more attractive because it stacks with his Ignore Defense.

Where Does Vallaryn Shine?

Vallaryn is strongest in progression content.

He performs well in:

  • Grim Forest
  • Dungeon bosses
  • Faction Wars
  • Cursed City
  • Early and mid-game Arena
  • General campaign and wave content

In testing, he performed surprisingly well in Faction Wars Hard, even competing with Rotos the Lost Groom in damage output.

His combination of Weaken, Leech, Heal Reduction, and self-sustain makes him a strong all-rounder.

Is Vallaryn Good in Arena?

Vallaryn can work in Arena, especially earlier in the game.

His A3 hits hard, and his passive counterattacks can punish healing champions. However, he struggles against late-game mechanics like Stoneskin, Total Guard, and high-end defensive teams.

So, while he can absolutely help newer players in PvP, he won’t replace dedicated Arena nukers for advanced accounts.

Final Thoughts

Vallaryn the Equalizer is exactly what a free login champion should be.

He is useful, versatile, and beginner-friendly without being completely broken.

His biggest strengths are:

  • Great progression utility
  • Reliable Heal Reduction
  • AoE Weaken and Leech
  • Strong self-sustain
  • Surprisingly good single-target damage
  • Strong value for newer accounts

Late-game players may only use him in specific areas like Faction Wars Hard or niche boss fights, but early and mid-game players can safely invest in him.

If you’re still progressing through dungeons, Grim Forest, Cursed City, or Faction Wars, Vallaryn is absolutely worth building.
