Void Hunters: All The Void Mechanics Explained

If you’ve spent any time in Void Hunters, you’ve probably noticed that not every fight feels the same. Some feel a lot harder and what is that weird purple bar on your heroes. That’s the Void at work.

This isn’t just another background mechanic. Void is a core system that fundamentally changes how battles play out, especially in tougher content like Hunting Grounds. Understanding it can be the difference between winning and losing.

In this article I am going to (at least attempt too) break it all down in a clear, practical way, and more importantly, show you how to actually use it to your advantage.

What Is the Void System?

Void Menace in Campaign

I guess lets start at the top. At its core, the Void system is a risk-and-reward mechanic that influences every fight. It introduces difficulty scaling through Void Menace, weakens your team through Void Touch, and offers powerful boosts via Void Power if you’re willing to take the risk.

Ultimately these are four key components you need to understand:

  • Void Menace
  • Void Touch
  • Void Power
  • Embrace the Void and Void Embrace (are these the same?)

Each of these interacts with the others, creating a system that rewards smart decision-making and punishes careless play.

Void Menace: The Difficulty Mode

Void Menace in Hunting Grounds

Think of Void Menace as the difficulty rating for a battle. It ranges from level 0 to 4 and plays a much bigger role than most players initially realise.

Inside a single physical fight, Void Menace remains fixed. But across a full Hunting Grounds run, it builds progressively as you advance, and this is where things really start to ramp up.

Each step through the Hunt adds progress toward the next Void Menace level, in my experience playing each step I take adds 3 or 4. Once you reach or go over 10 the level increases. This repeats all the way up to a maximum Void Menace level of 4. That means the further you go, the more dangerous everything becomes. So if it feels like the final stages of a Hunting Grounds run are significantly harder than the beginning, that’s because they genuinely are.

At higher Void Menace levels, Void-related enemies gain the Void Minion effect. This increases all Void Touch they inflict by 2% but also converts some of its Void Touch to Healing. If that wasnt enough it also significantly boosts their stats:

  • +10% Attack, Defense, and Max HP per level
  • +5% Speed per level

By the time you reach Void Menace 4, enemies can have up to +40% Attack, +40% Defense, +40% Max HP and +20% Speed.

That’s a massive jump in power and a big reason why stages and bosses at the end of a Hunt feel dramatically tougher than earlier encounters.

Theres more. On top of that, Void Menace also increases how often Void Touch is applied, reduces overall healing effectiveness and determines which characters can use Embrace the Void.

Lower levels, especially 0 to 1, are relatively safe. Once you hit level 2 and above, the Void becomes a serious threat that must be managed.

Void Touch: The Purple Bar

Void Touch Bar & Succumb Stack

Void Touch is the mechanic that will quietly ruin your run if you ignore it.

Every character has a Void Touch meter (the purple bar) that goes from 0 to 100 percent. As it increases, your character’s stats are reduced. This includes key attributes like attack, defense, speed, focus resistance and more.

When its maxed, you’re looking at up to a 20% stat reduction but thats not all. Upon reaching 100% your character Succumbs to the Void.

When this happens your Void Touch resets back to 0 but the stat reduction becomes permanent for the rest of the fight. This is shown visually with the “Succumbed” stack above your hero.

And yes, it can happen again. Each time it does, the penalties stack further, making your character weaker and weaker.

You want to avoid receiving multiple Succumb stacks if able because its not just the stats you lose.

  • At 2 Succumb Stacks you cannot resist detrimental effects. This includes debuffs as well as turn meter steal or buff dispels
  • At 3 Succumb Stacks you can no longer gain positive effects. This includes buffs, assists and turn meter gains.
  • At 4 Succumb Stacks…. its Instant Death

So while Void Touch might seem manageable early on, letting it build unchecked can completely cripple your team in longer fights, especially as Void Menace increases.

Void Power: Risk Vs Reward

Now here’s where things get interesting. Void Power is the system’s risk-reward engine.

When a character gains Void Power, they become stronger based on their unique Void Embrace trait. This could mean increased damage, bonus effects, or even completely new interactions.

But there’s a catch (of course there is, there always is). Void Power also increases how quickly that character gains Void Touch over time.

However, there’s also a huge upside. While a character has Void Power, the stat reductions from Void Touch are completely negated. It gives you a small window to ignore the negative effects of Void Touch or even a Succumb stack and finish the job.

You’re essentially trading long-term safety for short-term dominance. In high Void Menace fights, managing this this becomes even more important.

Embrace the Void: The All-In Button

Embrace the Void Button

Embrace the Void is the ability that activates this entire risk-reward loop.

When used you gain stacks of Void Power. The amount of Void Power stacks depends on the Void Menace levelConsumed characters gain Void Power stacks equal to Void Menace level, all others gain 1 less. But not all characters can Embrace the Void at any time. Which characters can use this depends on the Void Menace level:

  • Void Menace 0 – None
  • Void Menace 1 – Consumed
  • Void Menace 2 – Consumed & Tainted
  • Void Menace 3+ – All

However, when you use the ability you also immediately increase your Void Touch, furthermore, you continue to gain more Void Touch over time and this is where things get really tactical.

Early in a Hunt or lower campaign stages, you may not need to use it at all. But in later stages, especially when Void Menace is high and enemies are heavily buffed, using Embrace the Void at the right moment can be the difference between winning and losing.

Think of it as your clutch play.

Void Embrace: Every Character Plays It Differently

Angelo Void Embrace

Every character has a unique Void Embrace trait, and this is what makes the system so deep.

This trait defines what bonuses they gain from Void Power and any additional effects when activating Embrace the Void. Units also scale with more stacks, if you look at the above example for Angelo. In an encounter that is Void Menace 4, he gains 45% Atk and Crit Rate which is perfect for guaranteeing a quick kill.

Some characters become damage monsters. Others gain utility or survivability. And some even have built-in ways to manage or cleanse Void Touch. This means not every character should be using Embrace the Void in the same way.

Understanding your team’s Void Embrace traits becomes even more important in longer Hunting Grounds runs, where scaling Void Menace demands more precise decision-making.

How Void Touch Is Applied (And Why It Feels Random)

One of the biggest points of confusion for players is how Void Touch is actually applied during combat.

There are two main sources:

Skills and Effects

Some abilities explicitly apply Void Touch. These are clearly listed in skill descriptions, and you can check them in combat by holding on a character in combat. Alternatively units like Renna can also be viewed in the Hunter Menu.

At higher Void Menace levels, these effects become significantly stronger due to the Void Minion effect. What might feel manageable early can quickly spiral later in a Hunt.

System-Based Effects

At higher Void Menace levels, the game passively applies Void Touch through:

  • Taking damage
  • Receiving debuffs
  • Starting your turn

The exact numbers are intentionally hidden, but its all gross. The key takeaway though is the longer the fight goes and the higher the Void Menace level, the more punishing this system becomes.

Managing Void Menace During a Hunt

Hunters Blaze

Something a lot of us don’t realise is we’re not completely at the mercy of Void mechanics. In particular there are ways to slow down Void Menace progression during a Hunting Grounds run.

Certain actions can reduce or delay how quickly Void Menace increases, including:

  • Setting the Hunter’s Flame ablaze
  • Successfully clearing a Void Lair
  • Engaging with powerful Void Thralls

This adds another layer of strategy to your runs because it’s not just about winning fights. You have to carefully plan your route when you can, so you’re not facing a maxed-out Void Menace, Hunting Grounds boss with an already weakened team.

Cleansing Void Touch: Your Survival Tool

Besemin Skill 2

Managing Void Touch is just as important as dealing damage and there are two main ways to cleanse it:

Healing

For every 10% of health restored, you remove 1% of Void Touch.

Whilst it helps, it certainly isnt reliable and won’t carry you in high Void Menace scenarios.

Dedicated Cleansing Effects

Some characters and hunting ground boons have abilities specifically designed to reduce Void Touch. These are far more effective and become essential in longer fights or higher Void Menace levels. In the example above Besemin (who is slowly becoming my favourite legendary) has a skill which not only heals 20% when fully skilled. But also grants Untouchable preventing further Void Touch and can give 5% Void Touch Cleanse. If everything lines up and the target of the ability is below 50% HP, the heal and cleanse will add up to 9% Void Touch Cleanse.

If your runs are falling apart late, this is often what your team is missing.

Closing Thoughts

The Void system might feel overwhelming at first. And honestly, it is complex. But that’s also what makes Void Hunters engaging for me.

Once you understand that Void Menace ramps up across a Hunt, that enemies scale alongside it, and that Void Touch pressure increases over time, everything starts to make sense.

When you stop wondering why things feel harder and you start planning for it. That’s when things start to click.

So next time you head into a Hunting Grounds run, don’t just think about beating the next fight. Think about the entire journey.

Because in Void Hunters, the real challenge isn’t just surviving the Void.

It’s knowing exactly when to embrace it.
