How your Damage is actually calculated in Raid: Shadow Legends

spacer

In this article, we are going to break down the maths that goes into your damage output in Raid Shadow Legends so that you can have an understanding of how to output the most amount of damage from your champions.

spacer

This excludes certain champions who’s multipliers are based on multiple base stats, and also excludes Enemy Max HP damage.

This is the formula for how damage is really calculated.

Total ATK (or HP or DEF for HP or DEF champions) x Skill Multiplier x Increase Damage from Books x Crit Multiplier x Mastery Bonuses x Chance of Affinity Bonus x Buffs x Passives x Defense Mitigation

  • Total Attack = The total attack stat shown on your Champion page, any attack gained from an aura is also accounted for here, so x% of base Attack + shown total attack.
  • Crit Multiplier is 100% + Crit Damage % assuming you always crit.
  • Skill Multiplier is looked up from a Data Mined Source
  • Increase damage provided by books is found on the ability description
  • Buffs (example 50% Increased attack – 60% Increased Defense)
  • Passives such as Bad-El’s 20% increased damage to enemies under poisons

Above is the total formula, the Defense Mitigation is a little harder to explain, so let’s focus on the pre-mitigated damage breakdown.

Total Attack x (1 + Crit Damage%) x Skill Multiplier With Books x Mastery Effects x Buffs, Passives, Affinity Multipliers

spacer

From this formula, it is clear that books and masteries are of significantly more value than previously anticipated.

For example, for a champion with 250% damage, a 10% Damage increase from a skill book is 1.1 x the above formula.

Whereas +10% Crit Damage is only turning your crit multiplier from 3.5 = (1 + 250%) to 3.6 = (1 + 260%) which is only a 3.6/3.5 = 2.8% increase in damage.

For example, with numerical values:

Let’s take Kael and his A2 – Acid Rain – 100% Crit rate vs Void Affinity.

Kael has 1,200 base attack and his A2 has a multiplier of 4.65 x ATK and can be booked for 20% more damage.

If you build your Kael with 3,000 attack and 180% Crit Damage – No masteries, his damage would be:

3,000 [Total Attack] x 2.8 [Crit Multiplier = 1 + Crit Damage % / 100%] x 4.65 [Skill Multiplier] x 1.2 [Additional Damage from Books]

3,000 x 2.8 x 4.65 x 1.2 = 46,872 (Damage before Mitigation)

Now lets say, you roll an item and it gains +5% attack
5% of his base attack is +60 attack so his new damage breakdown is:

3,060 x 2.8 x 4.65 x 1.2 = 47,810

Instead of that +5% attack, let’s compare +5% Critical Damage, which changes the Critical Multiplier to 2.85 instead of 2.8, his new damage would then be

3,000 x 2.85 x 4.65 x 1.2 = 47,709

So:

5% C.Dmg gained us 837 damage
5% Attack gained us 938 damage

Now as a comparison – instead of adding stats, we will add the 5% damage gain from Heart of Glory mastery (when attacking with full hp)

3,000 x 2.8 x 4.65 x 1.2 x 1.05 = 49215.6
So a 5% Damage mastery caused a 2,343 gain in overall damage.

spacer

How do buffs/debuffs affect this?

Just as examples:

A 50% Increase attack buff, would further increase the total attack value by 50%
Bad-El’s passive is a straight 20% increase on this damage
25% Weaken debuff on the enemy, is a straight 25% increase on this damage.

In this case with Kael, it’s clear +5% Attack is better than +5% Crit Damage. With 180% Crit Damage, the point at which Crit Damage and Attack are equally valuable is when Kael has 2.8 x 1,200 Attack or 3,360 Attack.

spacer

Summary:

The perfect build is to aim for the ratio between Total Attack to Base Attack to be 1+ Crit Damage % / 100%

The damage from booking a champion likely will increase damage more than adding more base stat to your champion.

Hey HH team, love this stuff and thank you so much for mining this from the game and making it digestible for the community.
The work you have been doing recently completely eclipses the “improvements” Plarium have been making and has increased my enjoyment of the game no end!
Keep up the good work!
P.s. on the youtube vid HH said there was a download link here to get the tool/spreadsheet he was using. I can’t see it, am I being stupid?

Interesting watch.

Correct me if I’m wrong here, but
Getting Dracomorph (base 1520 ATK) from 1520 ATK to 3040 ATK doubles his damage.
Getting Fu-Shan (base 1443 ATK) from 1443 to 2886 ATK doubles his damage.

In essence, champions with lower base attack, are actually easier to scale? At least if you have any flat stat increasements on your gear. And therefore a low base attack on an attack champion is actually a good thing?

Thanks!
In a way yes, but also consider % chests scale higher bases faster. So it works in reverse

Higher base ATK does scale higher with ATK%, yes.
But from what I’m seeing, getting high ATK doesn’t matter, only how high your ATK is compared to the base.

So if 2 champions both find +150% ATK and +1000 flat ATK from gear, the champion that has the lower base will now have more ATK compared to their base, no?

The tool for this article is listed under premium membership, damage efficiency tool. A more intuitive place to put it is in the Tools section, in this article. Just sayin’.

Or put it in both places. Or link it from here. Make it infinitely discoverable.

I found one error in the tool. Mountain King is listed as an attack not an HP DPS toon in the data lookup table. I used this to increase damage on my top 3 DPS tunes by 14%, 18%, and 13%. Huge win!

Also, the HP damage calculator must be different than the other classes. Otherwise, my Mountain King would be doing 20 times as much damage as Trunda, which I know is not true.

Mountain King’s hp multiplier is 30% of his hp while his a1 attack multiplier is 1x attack. He scales way more off of hp and it is destructive to you to build any attack over hp on him.

Geyhair, you have to go to File, then save it, then reopen it, then you can use it.

I’ve noticed an issue with Kael on the damage efficiency excel sheet..base attack showing as Zero, which is obviously not correct? Looks like a typo in the Damage Type section? Your thoughts?

Hello and thank you for this amazing tool, I have just 1 question. Does the tool take into account 50% atk buff? For example my Trunda is 5000 attk and 250c.dmg – the tool says I should add more atk but with the atk buff she has 7500atk and then the tool says opposite. So if I want to find the best value should I put into the calculator her ATK after the 50% ATK buff? And if so, would it be possible to add this option in the calculator? Thank you very much for your help.

50% atk up actually make no difference as it increases your base by 50% and actual atk by 50% which means the atk ratio hasn’t changed and therefore sweet spot hasn’t changed

The calculation for Kael isn’t working. It shows “0” for his Primary Stat when I pull him up.

good job to give a first feeling what stat to improve first. The formula in the sheet is correct for all champions where damages are based on one single stat but not accurate for all champions having damages based on two stats like (ATT+HP or ATT+DEF…). In such situations the right calculations would need to consider the multipliers in formula and the current value from the second stat. In these dual cases the sheet is pessimistic with the effect of crit damage vs the main stat considered from hero type based and conclude to improve base stat over crit dmg a bit too much. This is the case with Mountain King as current example in the sheet

The first video talks about a three part series. I watched the damage and mitigation parts, but cant find the specialists parts regarding Seer and Royal Guard. Anyone have a link?

On kael there is a ) on the atk line I.e. “ATK)” remove the “(“ and this will fix the error. Your need to do this in the data.
