Episode 9 Recap

This episode, like every previous one, starts with the Arbiter, instructing her champions,

‘Our time grows short, attend well champions, you must know your enemy’

We start with Alure where we last left her, if you recall, she just received the full brunt of the Arbiters curse to unbind the sword after being tricked by Bad-El-Kazar. Alure is opening her eyes and trying to get up, she sees Elhain standing over her who tells her that she, Athel, Kael, Galek, Jizoh and Gnut had used their magics to save her life, in repayment they want her to tell them where to find Bad-El-Kazar, Alure is resistant and doesn’t trust them, Elhain uses her magic to force Alure to tell them what they want to know.

We jump to a cut scene, narrated by Alure, this will be left below as with previous episodes, before he became Bad-El-Kazar, he was known as Valkanen, he attended the academy of magic and was second best in his class, being beaten only by Arion his rival, they vied for the attention of the same woman (Lady of Ireth), despite Valkanen’s best efforts, Arion eventually won her affection.

In Valkanens rage, a voice reached out across the barrier between worlds, some weird magic mirror portal, this voice is Bad-El-Kazar, aka future him. Valkanen knew the risks of dark magic but could feel the power and Alure and no longer believed in his teacher’s warnings, he dips his hand in the mirror portal and it becomes blackened almost burned appearing, this is the start of his transition into Bad-El-Kazar.

Valkanen attends a gathering of fellow students and calls for Siroth the god of chaos, binding his soul to his, when he is finished, he realises he has killed all of his fellow students including Arion and the woman whom he had cared for.

The guards arrive and hunt for Valkanen, to escape he walks through the mirror portal as he goes the last remnant of Valkanen, the rose that he presented to his love interest in the beginning disappears.

We jump back to Alure, she tells them he has been alive a long time, and plans to use the sword to unseal the tower of beasts, Athel claims the Arbiter will stop him, and Alure tells them that he is as afraid of the Arbiter without form as he is the rain. They tell her that if they can get the sword, they will have all the components they need to summon the Arbiter, and Alure can get her revenge, Alure looks menacing and the episode ends.

Alure’s Transcript:

“Before he took the name Bad-El-Kazar, his name was Valkanen. At the academy of magic, where the brightest and best studied the occult and arcane arts, he was without equal. Except for one… Valkanen’s rival: Arion.

Arion presented a riddle to Valkanen. How could he best him at every turn? But there was a voice that spoke to Valkanen across the barrier between worlds. A voice of great power.

Valkanen had been warned about dark magic. But now, he could feel the power of Siroth, raw and merciless. The warnings of his teachers now reeked of cowardice. Darkness was just another side of power. There was nothing to fear. He was no longer Valkanen. He was becoming more than human.

For months, Valkanen trained in secret, labouring to understand Siroth’s dark arts. His magic now extended beyond illusions, mere appearances – this… was real magic. The changing of things. He now called out to Siroth, and at that moment, he bound his soul to the god of chaos. All power has a price.”
